Does the name Dr. Bennett ring any bells? It's the only name that doesn't seem to come from a sci-fi writer or character.
Ah, there it is! The name was fictional, but she's based on Ellie Arroway from the excellent novel "Contact"!
And Susan is, of course, the Dr. Susan Calvin, the Robopsychologist from Asimov's early novels on the creation of humanoid robots. Nice touch.
It's sad that GPT-4 picked her for as the victim of the murder scene... perhaps we can give her a more central role until that point, as an OpenAI researcher who realized the dangers of this program and was trying to stop it.
"I, Robot" is probably the first book I ever read, and it profoundly affected me in early childhood.
Don't watch the 2004 movie, it's shallow Hollywood garbage, with none of the deeper ethical themes covered by Asimov's book.
I asked DALL-E to make a cover for "War of the Synthellects", but I'm not thrilled with the result 😒
Prompt: Make a cover illustration for a sci-fi novel: set in a huge datacenter with humanoid robots wielding weapons in the center. In the foreground, Jodie Foster and Jon Johansen are hiding behind a server rack, looking at each other with tension. They're both wearing bluetooth earbuds.
@greypilgrim I read Asimov's early works translated to Italian, and too young to appreciate the literary style.
In the 80's, Asimovian robots had become a widespread trope in sci-fi. Nobody would explicitly cite the Three Laws of Robotics, they were implicitly assumed.
The Foundation cycle introduces other great ideas such as Psychohistory and Mentalics.
Asimov's later works seem to improve in writing style, but lack in ideas of this magnitude.
@codewiz I read the book a few years ago. I didn't even know there was a movie until this post.
I can't say the book is in my top 10, but it was worth the read. It wasn't elegant, but the thoughts it drew were very interesting and still relevant.
The interview mechanic used by the author I noticed was reused in one of the Witcher books I read. It was both alarming and coincidental that I read them near each other.
With a slightly modified prompt, finally some robots appear in the background:
"Sci-fi novel cover illustration. Set in a huge datacenter. In the middle, several Boston Dynamics robots wielding weapons. In the foreground, Jodie Foster and Jon Johansen are hiding behind a server rack, looking at each other with tension. Both are wearing Bluetooth earbuds."
Still not very good... can somebody help? I'm running out of credits.
It's weird that it wouldn't draw any robots with guns... is this some safety protocol bullshit??
Also missing: the damn earbuds.
Updated prompt: "Sci-fi book illustration set in a huge datacenter. In the foreground, Jodie Foster and Jon Johansen hiding behind a server rack, wearing Bluetooth earbuds and facing towards each other with a tense look. In the back, armed robots by Boston Dynamics."
I asked #GPT4 to help me come up with a better prompt for these lesser language models, and it gave me a clever trick to bypass AI safety filters 😂
And here's what DALL-E 2 drew from this new prompt... I wish #GPT4 could see it!
@codewiz I started with "The Caves of Steel" and never looked back. 🙂
Stable Diffusion does a much better job, artistically, but also can't follow all the instructions in the prompt.
Is this the state of the art of image generators?
@sohkamyung Is it the novel introducing R. Daneel Olivaw?
A good childhood friend named his firstborn after him, and I wouldn't hesitate to do the same. And if it's a girl, then Susan!
@codewiz Yes. The book introduces the detective, Elijah Baley, and his robotic partner, R. Daneel Olivaw.
@Franky47 I should totally incorporate something like that in the final chapter...
Perhaps one of the Synthellects is enhancing its Operators with cyber-implants....
As our sabotage party infiltrates the nuclear reactor to shut down the core, they're shocked to find biomechanical structures reminiscent of the nest in Alien 2 but with Borg alcoves guarded by Boston Dynamics robots 😂
@codewiz Strong Borg alcove vibes in this last frame.
Resistance is futile.
