Weirdly the DOS version of RoboCod still stores music in the traditional Amiga tracker format, but the music has been drastically simplified from Amiga originals. And yet the DOS title theme file is somehow nearly x3 times the size of the Amiga one. 🤷♂️

@hanna It's definitely not a higher rate of samples. I am intrigued, but not enough to actually open up the files and look.

@dosnostalgic My guess is that it was for performance, complex music has a direct CPU cost -- but then they tried going with a higher sample rate for everything to make up for it? (Though a lot of music of the era was only 4 channels, in which case there wouldn't have been much to simplify)

@dosnostalgic Was it adapted to run off something like the modedit or mp.com engine where the speeds and fx weren’t accurate/omitted (lots of weird platform-specific timings in mod format iirc)? Or more like fewer channels to save on CPU?

@ExtentOfTheJam It's still 4 channels, but less instruments and no fx or panning. I bet you it's the samples somehow, even though they are not higher rate, but I'm too lazy to check.

@dosnostalgic maybe parts coalesced into loops

@ExtentOfTheJam That's what I though too, but then I looked, and no, that's not the case.

@jwalzer @ExtentOfTheJam My original suspicion was that the samples were pre-pitched, thus increasing the number. But I don't think that's the case either.

Maybe they premixed some samples or put some effects on the samples that were hardware effects on the Amiga?
