   Ugh, I'm costing my Mastodon instance 2.58GB in storage and who knows how much in bandwidth and CPU usage! 😰

     @codewiz there is no step by step to make media smaller when you sign up. Like that you can crunch sound to 32kbit/s and it still works etc.
     Everybody thinks bandwith is almost free. Nobody thinls about storage and RAM.

     @1lyaP Storage at rest costs much less than online key-value storage that's actually highly available and backed up regularly.

     @codewiz 64 Gb flash drive cost 12$. Same for DRAM and CPU. IT-resources are cheap and available worldwide.

     I'd say that admin's time, interest, skills and other resources are things we all should be grateful for 😍

     @codewiz Some Mastodon instances ask for donations (on Patreon or elsewhere) to help pay for the hosting costs. That's what I'm doing for some instances that I'm using.

     The About page of your Mastodon instance may list this option.

     @codewiz Telegram does it. On my old Windows Phone Telegram does make anything 360p and quite fast and with high quality.
     Tusky e.g. does not, not even a hint. There are OSS video cruncher in all app stores. Ppl notice that some Videos load instantly while others dont load in a train e.g.
