I'm still extremely skeptical of providing my cell phone number to companies for 2fa. I worry more about the company using that as a unique bit of information to link me across services.
I wish there were a search engine, complete with their own infrastructure, and not just something built on bing/google, that was run by a non-profit. The model I'm thinking of is Wikipedia.
Search has been captured by corporate interests. That's not good for consumers imo. GAM should be prevented, by law, from entering into agreements to support their big tech monopolies in the search area.
Hey #fediverse, can you recommend any digital artists who are taking commissions? I want to have a digital portrait of myself created for us on social media.
Metallica introduced me to metal. Before that I was really into AC/DC but I distinctly remember the world premier of One on MTV in 1989. It was an event and I made sure I was in front of the TV at the appropriate time. Kill em All was the first album I ever bought with my own money quickly followed by Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. I love the Black album and everything before it.
@tagomago oh? I run snikket server and client on my android phone. I was able to install the client on ios fine a few months ago. Admittedly, I don't use ios anymore and have not tried the client since.
@tagomago Yes. Nearly 100% of my friends and family were on imessage so that's big a huge problem. When I tried the xmpp clients on ios they just didn't work well, especially notifications.
Does anyone use xmpp or matrix to message with non tech friends? Or family?
I understand that signal is problematic but it's a good messaging app with a grest experience that's approachable for non tech users. It has modern features that people expect in a messaging app.
I'm very liberal with my likes and boosts here on Mastodon. If I read something that I enjoyed in some way, I will probably like it because I want the person to know that I liked it. So here's a little dopamine hit for you. You're welcome.
I'm liberal with boosting because I feel that the Fediverse in general has challenges with discoverability since there's no algo. I boost things I like and find interesting because maybe my followers will to.
Hot take: I think the government should support and donate to Mozilla. Firefox could be the people's browser. Free. Open source. Available to all. The government could mandate that all websites built for the government must work with Firefox. Ideally, Mozilla could stop taking Google money and stop trying to figure out how to serve us ads in order to raise funds. Is anyone advocating for such an idea?
