I'm curious: what's your favorite terminal?
alacritty, Gnome Terminal, kitty, Konsole, rxtv, wezterm, something else? What sets it apart from the others?

In slightly related news, I've just started a terminal feature & compatibility list in termenv's repo.
Want to help out and contribute? There's a little how-to that only takes a minute to go through. Don't be shy, open an issue or send me a pull request! 😘
@fribbledom st from suckless
@fribbledom
definitely #Terminator....
Reason: it can tile and I am too dumb to use/understand #tmux😅
(Yeah and because I want a complete DE and therefore cannot do proper tiling there, terminator handles that very well)
@fribbledom I think the info about xterm is not accurate. Unless you mean something really specific, it's easy to change the default background and foreground colors in xterm
You're right, I should have probably clarified that a bit better: I'm looking for ways to change these settings programmatically with the help of command sequences.
Possibly, yes. I was tempted to do that, but wasn't sure how many people connect "vte" with their Gnome terminal app.
@fribbledom Wouldn't it be a good idea to list common libraries/implementations instead? For instance Gnome Terminal uses VTE for the actual terminal and I'd expect that any terminal using VTE to have the same capabilites, like for instance XFCE terminal
@fribbledom xterm. It's installed by default on OpenBSD and properly secured with pledge() and unveil()

@fribbledom Used Konsole since KDE 2, and the muscle memory and customisations are now so deep I don't think switching would be possible even if I wanted to.
Killer features include infinite scrollback, tabs that can be moved between windows, sending input to multiple tabs, monitoring tabs for activity and silence, and programmatic configuration over DBus.
@fribbledom Just plain ole xterm. Call me old school.
@fribbledom I must admit that I use Windows Terminal, because it's build-in. On my laptop I use gnome-terminal.
I've pondered about switching to alacritty or kitty, so watching this :)
If you got access to a posix-shell in your WIndows Terminal, I'd love to see the output of the commands in the little guide I link from the README!
@fribbledom the two query commands for the color scheme yield no results, but the others pass I would say.
Yep, looks like! Thank you so much! ❤️
@fribbledom i see Power Shell on the list; It's pretty safe to assume that they all fail. Running all echo commands just prints the string to the terminal. So either it completely works differently, or that doesn't work at all.
You can enable support for ANSI sequences in Power Shell and even the old-school Windows command prompt - at least in more recent Windows releases. I'm not sure if it's enabled by default, but apps can request virtual terminal processing to enable it.
@fribbledom I'm interested too! Long time termite user, rxvt-unicode (urxvt) before that. Using konsole now bc its working well enough and I'm on KDE (also finally moving away from my beloved awesome-wm, 😢, not sure where to just yet). Working okay so far other than can't get color emoji working but only poked into that superficially. My attempt caused rectangles in konsole (copying my nix font settings to new machine), so reverted and leaving alone for now :).
@fribbledom my favorite is Konsole, or just regular TTY.
Could you do me a favor and run the commands listed on https://github.com/muesli/termenv/blob/master/ansi_compat.md and see how foot reacts to them?
@fribbledom I have been using foot for a while. I think it's the default terminal for sway, so probably it's number of users is increasing.
@fribbledom
Curiosity didn't kill the cat, or the bear. Why? Because the question is about personal tastes. 😉
@fribbledom Guake. Hotkeyed to ctrl + `
Thank you very much, seems like foot is fully compliant there! The weird output is actually expected, it's the terminal responding to the query.
Also thank you @dnkl for making foot!
@fribbledom this wold be it... only some give weird output.
@dnkl is the main dev of foot if you're looking for where to direct your feedback.
@fribbledom I still prefer Termite to other alternatives because I find the keyboard control superior. While Alacritty can get close, it still does not feel the same, plus Termite will continue working in absence of a GPU. Those both are the reasons why I have continued the development of Termite at https://github.com/aperezdc/termite/ — I even tried contacting the original authors to ask whether they would be onboard passing the baton, but after a few attempts without any result than radio silence I forked
@fribbledom I have been reasonably happy with Alacritty for the past few years.
@fribbledom xfce4-terminal because it has copy and paste
