It's simply unbelievable just *how* bad Nvidia's Linux support is 🤦

Replaced a GTX 1060 with the cheapest and (on paper) less capable AMD card I managed to get, and it's just staggering how smooth and glitch-free everything feels now.

    - Desktop: renders at roughly four times the fps
    - Suspend/resume issues: gone
    - Rendering glitches: disappeared
    - DisplayPort on boot-up: works now
    - FreeSync at 120hz: yup
    - Linux console: properly scaled fonts

    It's like I upgraded from a 10 year old machine 😂

...and yes, I absolutely tried every trick in the book. Experimented with both nouveau and the proprietary nvidia drivers, played with DRI settings, kernel module options, and Xorg configs. Had special scripts in place to reload the Nvidia module on resume. I managed to make it work, but it was still a pretty miserable experience.

      Obligatory: "Fuck you, Nvidia!"

Got a deal on an ASUS RX 6500 XT. Would I recommend this card? No, not necessarily, on paper this is currently a bad deal. I just needed a functioning desktop however, I don't care about gaming on this machine. So yes, for that it's absolutely been worth it.

Yeah, on paper it's almost a downgrade, isn't it? It's like night and day tho.

You're absolutely right that other Nvidias & even other 1060s do not show (all of) the same symptoms. I almost wish I could look into the drivers to figure out what's going on here. There are internal block-lists for specific features on certain cards, but with the Nvidia driver being a big black box, we'll probably never quite figure it out. I'm just glad I don't have to anymore.

      @fribbledom Interesting upgrade

Also, I do wonder if card vendor can affect it too, since while it's a bit glitchy, my 6GB GTX 1060 hasn't had a lot of the issues you mentioned

I have an Asus Strix OC one for reference

@fribbledom I am using a nvidia 3070 and before that a 1080. I do not have any of these problems at all.

I am also using a 240hz monitor/freesync etc. Displayport works just fine? Just like Suspend/Hibernate and all that works just fine?

Even games work just... fine? Even better than on Windows in certain cases?

I would appreciate more open drivers of nvidia, sure. But ppl really are hyperbole about their current drivers, seriously.

Yeah, I've tried nouveau as well. It has an entire different set of issues and glitches in my experience. The rendering performance on 4k and 5k displays alone was pretty much a showstopper, already. The last time I tested it, it didn't cope with my current display's native 5120x1440 resolution *at all*.

@fribbledom Were you using Nouveau before or the non-Free drivers? Because if the non-Free drivers are THAT bad I'm honestly surprised.

(And it makes me wonder how Nvidia manages to work well in Linux based CUDA-using supercomputers.)

When getting stuck with nvidia it's a horrible experience

usually horrible again at upgrade time as well
