Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Sunday, 12-Nov-2017 17:52:03 UTC Bob Mottram Pleroma with the Mastodon frontend on !Freedombone. It's not really my particular taste, but for anyone who likes the Tweetdeck style this allows you to get the user experience of Mastodon but without the gigantic Ruby backend. This can run on a Beaglebone Black in about 150MB of RAM. https://social.freedombone.net/attachment/54956 -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Sunday, 15-Oct-2017 09:29:19 UTC Bob Mottram Added a scary warning if you choose Google as a DNS resolver on !Freedombone. https://social.freedombone.net/attachment/49910 -
hobbsc (hobbsc@gs.sdf.org)'s status on Sunday, 21-May-2017 14:14:51 UTC hobbsc Beautiful day outside. Having a little oatmeal and !coffee before I decide what little project to mess with until this afternoon. Either continue the !freedombone setup, brush up on Python 3, or build my tape measure yagi already. This afternoon, I’ll be taking my son to the lake for a school function. Should be a decent day, I hope. Good !tzag, dear fedizens. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2017 13:08:34 UTC Bob Mottram So I've re-introduced rate limiting on !Freedombone to hopefully provide better DDoS protection. I can do something similar for the !postActiv debian install script.
The reason why I took out the rate limits originally is no longer relevant, and was Beaglebone Black specific. When I was first using it, kernel support was still in development and removing rate limits was part of a process of elimination for related bugs. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2017 11:36:45 UTC Bob Mottram @maiyannah @sina I'll look into it. I'm pretty sure in early versions of !Freedombone I had iptables rate limits, but took them out when trying to fix instabilities which were probably actually kernel issues. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Sunday, 23-Apr-2017 22:20:31 UTC Bob Mottram Qvitter notifications now also expire and are subject to blocking rules on !Freedombone -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Saturday, 22-Apr-2017 05:48:10 UTC Bob Mottram @hattiecat @archaeme @maiyannah I think I might have encountered this in OrFox with Qvitter. There's a particular bad commit which gets reverted in the install of Qvitter on !Freedombone -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Friday, 21-Apr-2017 21:54:25 UTC Bob Mottram @maiyannah @jjg I didn't know that, so it might be worth investigating for the "onion only" version of !Freedombone. The might be some hardcoded clearnet stuff too. I think some Google maps stuff was left in gnusocial (I removed the rest) and that will surely be clearnet. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Friday, 21-Apr-2017 18:01:03 UTC Bob Mottram Added the ability to block particular gnusocial/postActiv nicknames to the !Freedombone control panel under "domain blocking". There are existing block/mute controls via the API, but they're not perfect and so this just ensures that the spooks don't creep back in.
Please note that this does not mean that I have assumed the wooly mantle of a Mastodonian who is fixated upon blocking and banning anyone they happen to politically disagree with. It's more about defending your server from potential legal threats. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Thursday, 20-Apr-2017 18:38:36 UTC Bob Mottram Added the ability to switch user interfaces between Qvitter and Pleroma for gnusocial/postActiv on !Freedombone. Pleroma isn't quite feature complete yet, and some users may just prefer the Qvitter UI. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Thursday, 20-Apr-2017 16:37:05 UTC Bob Mottram @herrabre @polymerwitch Mailpile is pretty good on !Freedombone. It's main advantage is that I can read and reply to email on mobile devices without putting any GPG keys onto them. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Thursday, 20-Apr-2017 13:55:15 UTC Bob Mottram Reminder that I still havn't got Matrix going on !Freedombone https://medium.com/@RiotChat/riot-web-and-desktop-version-0-9-8-released-5ac14eb13cdd -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Thursday, 20-Apr-2017 12:51:46 UTC Bob Mottram Added some blocking scripts to !Freedombone such that if any gnusocial content from blocked domains gets around the firewall (via replies/conversations and such) then it still gets scrubbed from the database. It's a hacky solution, but might make for a better user experience. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Tuesday, 18-Apr-2017 22:29:23 UTC Bob Mottram @gideonro I'm running my own gnusocial server and then just federate with the rest. When you're the admin you can set the limit to anything you want. It also means I keep control of my data, can back it up and so on. You too can do this easily with !Freedombone https://freedombone.net -

For the newbies. Ugh, well, what to say? I'm a Free Software hacker. I use a mechanical keyboard and trackball and I am an Arch/Parabola user. In a former incarnation I mostly did industrial robotics and computer vision, but now I'm mostly interested in self-hosting and things pertaining to running communications systems.
I've always been interested in self-organizing systems and emergent processes. Systems which try to survive. This is the commonality across the various things I've done.

Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Sunday, 16-Apr-2017 15:27:20 UTC Bob Mottram @nullkal there may be good legal reasons for blocking certain servers and on on !Freedombone you can block domains at the firewall level. But in most cases my impression is that some admins are blocking other instances for trivial reasons or because some blacklist has circulated made up by someone who was clueless to begin with.
If you have a non-trivial number of users then any instance blocking decision needs to be the kind of thing you can justify to them. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Sunday, 16-Apr-2017 15:18:40 UTC Bob Mottram SearX metasearch on !Freedombone. As usual you can customize the background from the control panel https://social.freedombone.net/attachment/17844 -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Sunday, 16-Apr-2017 09:57:28 UTC Bob Mottram @lambadalambda I'll be interested to see how that works out. Possibly if there is eventually a working full stack Pleroma then I might add it as a separate app on !Freedombone, rather than just as a front end to gnusocial and postActiv. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Saturday, 15-Apr-2017 22:18:39 UTC Bob Mottram So SearX is now added to !Freedombone in the manner that I'd originally envisaged, such that the path between you and the box is onion routed and also the outgoing query from the box to search engines is also onion routed.
This of course means you can use engines like Google, but for me that's a feature rather than a problem. There are still other pretty good Tor accessible engines out there.
