@muehlfield Yup, thats pretty much what I was trying to say at the end. I agree. There is a reason I strongly support programs which are explicitly designed to support peope getting ahead, rather than programs that just dump money in their lap. Because if your poor you DO have a harder time and we should try to ensure anyone who is willing to do the work can make it.
I generally support ideas like this:
1) 100% tax payed education at all levels up to and including PhD
2) incentive based welfare. That is, everyone gets the bare minimum not to starve to death but if you want more than half a room and stale bread for dinner then you need to be commited to job training or education, but if you persue such things (which are free per #1) then welfare should be generous with both housing and food so long as you continue to perform
3) healthcare reform as well, a bit of a tangent but we need better mental health for the poor if they are to get over many of the issues they deal with, not to mention physical health.
@khird #1 is an issue regardless of tagging. If your a new user you have no followers, so you wont get many people who see what you post regardless. With that said, there is no reason to think you **need** tags to be seen. Many users would likely still view a feed that is inclusive of all posts and only **exclude** tags rather than use an exclusive feed and select **inclusive** tags. Ultimately, the power is with the user what they want to see. just as some users view an unfiltered federated fee now.
#2 Yes people will try. Any intelligently designed system will, however, prevent that. Stackoverflow uses the system I provided and because it is well designed prevents issue #2, not to mention prevents issue #1 with its designs as well.
I see a few assumptions in your reply that I'd disagree with off the bat:
1) that learning to use both hands is double the effort.
2) That my intention in promoting kids learn to use both hands has to do with their ability to record information
3) That it takes more time at all, at least when taught from a young age.
Let me explain those points in more detail. To #1 and #3, I find learning to use each hand does not mean you double train on all tasks. Typically once you train your other hand on any fine motor task at all (like writing) then it translates to fine motor skills for other tasks, like drawing. In other words you dont have to learn to write x2, then learn to draw x2, then learn to type x2, etc If you are taught to use both hands on all tasks all the time (switching between them) then you will learn at about the same pace as someone using one hand, once you gain basic motor skills at all.
Now to point #2, well as I covered in the last blip, it isnt about ways to record data, so much as physical skills: hitting a baseball, knitting, climbing a tree, writing, drawing, painting, playing the piano.
The more you train both hands well the better you are at many other similar tasks. When you prefer one hand over the other in most tasks, however, then you wind up at a deficit in physical skill.
Since it is no extra time if done from an early age (and only a minimal amount when learned as an adult) then I'd say it isnt wasted time since the amount of time investment is minimal and the advantages it bestows significant.
@rasterman Except that isnt the case. Picking column 2 does not have the end result of civilization. Picking columns #1 and #3 results in that. Your argument was only that it was inevitable, which even if that is true then going along with it speeds up "the end" doesnt slow it down.
So sorry but there is no logic in what you say, just mental gymnastics
@rasterman Nah gets eaten by both column #1 and #3 sadly. But just because two forms of evil are likely to prevail doesnt suggest that either form is "the way to go".
Perhaps but the way I see it there are two options
1) he just was never educated. Since many would feel insecure about this it is natural to be in denial and convince yourself you are actually the only one who truly knows how things work. This is sad, but you wont combat it by attacking them or ridiculing them. It is better to let them know you will be supportive and help teach them if they want.
2) they will refuse to learn even when given the opperunity. This is often the case and in which case it is a waste of everyones time to try. With that said it still isnt productive to attack the person. Best to just let them know they are wrong, but otherwise not attack them and offer up #1 should they decide to learn in the future.
Regardless except in a few situations I dont see it as helpful to be antagonistic over it. Help if they will let you, or just walk away.. only way to result in any good as far as i can see it.
@Ytrezar Well i think its because they dont pay attention. We are in the #1 spot on the server list duue to our growth % right now and i think most people just pick the first instace and dont read up on it. Moreover if they are posting in another language they probably ignore the bulk of the feed
The #3 spot has changed a few times today actually. We started at #4 and quickly moved to #1, I think it runs a rolling average we just needed to accumulate.
QOTO has always had really good frowth even before we were on the list.
@shibaprasad I wouldn't say im a master at python, but I use it and I'm a good programmer in general...
As for how I learn it.. well there are two parts to learn for programming to me:
1) The theory - this part is completely disconnected from a language, you can, and often should, do this in psuedocode when working with it in its pure form
2) The language / platform technicals - This is stuff like syntax, and what posix means or how some bytecode is defined or whatever. This is the concrete part
They are both equally as vital, #1 is usually neglected among many programmers in my opinion and it really hurts their abilities when this is the case.
As for how I learned, well #1 was mostly from books and then later peer-reviewed studies coupled with any internet resources I could find (a lot of IRC chat rooms too).
#2 is usually from example code snippets and API documentation and, depending ont he quality of those two, perhaps a lot of trial and error. But this half is less using books, for me, and more just digging in and coding and just reading the technical documentation as you do.
@Surasanji We also got enough users to be listed as the #1 largest instance on joinmastodon.org if you use the default sorting settings.. Which means we are getting most users who want a big instance and likes STEM (which is most indians on twitter I guess :) )
@jasper I dunno, if i worry about white washing history Obama's used of murder without due process on american citizens and the democrats painting him as a "good guy" is a far bigger offense to me if thats our priority.
I'd take offense if she might have white washed over a DECISION he made as president (just as I do when they do that in the above case with obama). But I have no issue at all with painting him as a decent person who had hard decisions to make and simply made decisions I disagree with.
She is tackling the #1 overwhelming problem in america right now.. the "I'm offended by your difference of opinion" crowd which has effectively degraded america to a shit show on both sides.
So i am more than happy to see her combating the top issue even if that means a little collateral damage to the fact that people dont recognize his mistakes as readily as I'd like.
At no point did I tell you how much value you should put into the poll.
But you have two choices as someone who opposes trump
1) convince ourselves to reject anything that sounds like it could remotely be construed as something positive about trump, and as a result of that group denial not be informed enough to help make a educated and effective plan to dethrone him.. or...
2) recognize the reality, that a lot, even perhaps a majority (or damn close), of people do support him and try to fight against that issue head on, well educated, and possibly even be effective at combating it.
Choice is yours. But all I saw last election and since from the democrats is #1 with very little of #2. so I fled the country with little to no hope of the democrats pulling it together in time.
I do hope you and others prove me wrong though and get trump out of office and maybe even get a half-decent candidate through the primaries... I dont have high hopes though given the facts.
