So why couldn't #ArchLinux have both llvm-libs-14 and llvm-libs-15 parallel installed for a smoother migration?

#Debian and derivatives allow parallel installing any lib* packages, and #Fedora sometimes does it out of necessity:

rpm -qa | grep llvm

llvm14-libs-14.0.5-4.fc37.x86_64
llvm-libs-15.0.6-1.fc37.x86_64
llvm-15.0.6-1.fc37.x86_64

(zig still uses llvm-libs-13)

Ok, I booted a #Fedora #Rawhide live image, which has a pre-release kernel 6.2, and amdgpu acceleration works just fine out of the box.

Ok, I hooked up the new RX 7900 XT and...

...it didn't work out of the box on #ArchLinux :crywink:

I mean, the desktop renders, but it's using llvmpipe (software) compositing. Happens with both #Wayland and X11, both #KDE and #Sway.

Why? I couldn't figure from dmesg nor the journal...

@codewiz That's interesting. Afaik a user's trajectory from MJ to #archlinux is quite common [including me], but the reverse direction is much less common. Good luck. BTW [heehee], i wonder if you'll notice slower boot times now. For the 3 years i used MJ, its boot times felt "normal" to me, but once i moved to Arch itself 3 years ago, i found much faster boot times. Apparently MJ devs compile/d their kernels with heaps of extra modules than pure Arch [for wider system compatibility i presume]?

The primary reason I'm downloading a live image is that I need to recover #ArchLinux after the last update inexplicably uninstalled /boot/vmlinuz-linux 😅

@Gamewarrior010 Ugh... but it's not like #ArchLinux has always been free of update issues for me, particularly with packages signed with GPP keys not yet present in the arch keyring...

Also, I'm curious to see what the Manjaro installer looks like...

I've been using #ArchLinux for years, but I couldn't recommend it to any of my less technical friends. Even with archinstall, it's still not a smooth experience.

@benoit @makuharigaijin This is on my #Fedora 37 laptop and my #ArchLinux desktop. Both distros have been very good at shipping up-to-date KDE packages. Fedora stable updates actually lags behind a few days, but I usually take the updates from updates-testing.

@tagomago Genuine bugs are excusable, but I read that the developers knew about the issue before releasing the update, and took a stance that #ArchLinux users should have figured out that GRUB needs to be reinstalled manually.

(take it with a grain of salt, it comes from second-hand accounts by pissed users on r/ArchLinux and r/Fedora).
