The #Fediverse and #Metaverse are like water and sodium. They are fundamentally incompatible with each other and can never be integrated in a way that benefits both (when corporate and community-owned things come together it will always benefit the corporate side at the expense of the community-owned side). Anyone who claims they can work together has either been maliciously misinformed or is maliciously misinforming you.
We, the moderation and administration of tech.lgbt, are signing the Anti-Meta Fedi Pact in fellowship with our peer communities. (https://vantaa.black/pact)
There is over a decade of precedent that Facebook will not have users' best interests as their guiding principle but rather profit margins, if it joins the Fediverse.
We at tech.lgbt have long held the belief that corporation owned instances are a threat to the core of the Fediverse: freedom for users to be themselves and to be a part of their communities. The 2010s saw the loss of online freedom when the majority of the Web was consolidated into a few destinations, and Facebook entering here could lead us back to centralization. Furthermore, NDAs for server admins will constrain our sovereignty online by binding us legally from disrupting their business.
We are not products. We are people, and we do not welcome Facebook in this space.
Additionally, if you encounter an instance admin speaking favorably about #facebook joining the #fediverse, please bring them to my attention via report or DM. It would be useful to know which instances are no longer trustworthy to federate with in this upcoming shitshow.
If your instance admin is speaking favorably about #facebook joining the #fediverse, get out now before they start feeding your data to the company partly responsible for overturning several elections (by violating data privacy laws with impunity). The company that demonstrates a clear conservative bias with every act.
Looking for a safer instance? Try this list of spaces with admins of integrity.
This is a preemptive call to #Fediblock Meta's #P92/#Barcelona instance, for three reasons at least: 1. it'll be huge and extremely poorly moderated; 2. it will be a #privacy nightmare, allowing Meta to extensively profile #Fediverse users with greater ease; 3. it will be used to #EEE the Fediverse in the same way their “support” for #RSS and #XMPP was used to wipe them out from the general consciousness with a rug-pull (my full thoughts on this: http://wok.oblomov.eu/tecnologia/credible-threat-1/ )
Ways not to ingratiate yourself with the fediverse:
Be a trillion dollar company and approach fedi devs secretly and make them sign non-disclosure agreements with you so they can be sued if they reveal the details of your communications.
When #META invites you to secretive talks about the #fediverse and you are told to not share anything about those talks, be it by spoken agreement or an NDA — remember admiral Ackbar. It's a trap.
There are a lot of worries that it will overtake and pollute the fediverse (incl. Mastodon). There is even a lobby started that wants to coordinate to block Meta en masse. Others say that it's a great opportunity for Mastodon and the fediverse to have more users, content and publicity.
What about todon.eu and todon.nl I hear you ask. I like to poll the todon.* community about what to do with Meta when we have more facts, so when we can make an informed decision.
🔥 We are excited to let everyone know that our full website is now live!
We hope this will be an easy way for new users to get started with #Mastodon & join the wider #Fediverse & an organizing hub to build & spread a better, more open social web of ALL fediverse offerings.
Kbin had a successful round of funding thru NLNet https://nlnet.nl/project/Kbin and has already pulled in about 3k thru donations at https://buymeacoffee.com/kbin The really shows how much support we have right now for alternative self hosted infrastructure and I hope prompts even more people to step up and help build this thing we call the #fediverse together.
Kitsune is a new project that has joined the fediverse recently. It's mostly written in Rust and intends on Mastodon API compatibility so it can use the existing app ecosystem. It also just got initial support for viewing full PeerTube and Lemmy posts!
THREAD: I made a series of images for an Instagram post I made about migrating to the fediverse. I figured I'd share with anyone else who wants to use, so I included some blank template versions too. DM if you'd like the Adobe Illustrator file so you can make your own edits. And please, comment if I got anything wrong so I can correct it.
Signs of the #RedditMigration in action: Three of the top 6 #Fediverse servers are not only not Mastodon.social but they are not even microblogging servers - but rather are #Threadiverse servers.
That is only seriously good for the entire Fedi infrastructure. Diversity is strength.
Something that should be apparent from the #TwitterMigration is that the real growth doesn’t start until there’s good native apps from Android and iOS.
Jerboa for Android and mlem for iOS are good starts but they’re both in alpha, and they mainly support #Lemmy.
I’m not aware of a #Kbin mobile app – especially since Kbin is so new.
But I have no doubt someone is building an app, especially since #Reddit is discontinuing free API access for 3rd party developers by the end of the month.
Some of those app developers will probably want to develop for the #Fediverse soon – if they’re not already.
