  KDE is an international free software community that develops free and open-source software. As a central development hub, it provides tools and resources that allow collaborative work on this kind of software. Well-known products include the Plasma Desktop (the default desktop environment on many Linux distributions), Frameworks and a range of cross-platform applications like Krita or digiKam designed to run on Unix and Unix-like desktops, Microsoft Windows, and Android. Origins KDE (back then called the K(ool) Desktop Environment) was founded in 1996 by Matthias Ettrich, a student at the University of Tübingen.At the time, he was troubled by certain aspects of the Unix desktop. Among his concerns was that none of the applications looked or behaved alike. In his opinion, desktop applications of the time were too complicated for end users. In order to solve the issue, he proposed the creation of a desktop environment in which users could expect the applications to be consistent and easy to use. It's ironic that Fedora 37 Beta on track... with the main package of #GNOME 3 having broken deps!
UPDATE: turns out that was caused by the gnome-screensaver package, which hasn't been updated nor rebuilt since Fedora 32.
Was the screensaver deprecated due to some #Wayland idiosyncrasy? Is the screensaver hard-coded into gnome-shell now?
I don't care, I use #KDE :kde:

@globalc To be fair, KDE has its own array of problems, with Qt being an ancient C++ codebase filled with anti-patterns: deep hierarchies, virtual hooks, custom containers, string-based signals, awkward ownership model...
Modern #KDE moved to QML heavily for applets and settings panels, which is essentially JavaScript, CSS and a text-based templating language which isn't HTML for some reason.
I'm sure QML is nicer than old-school Qt C++, but less robust than modern C++ and Rust.

My least favorite proposal is "Making #KDE #NEON the official KDE distro".
Maintaining a fork of Ubuntu LTS with newer KDE packages seems like a big distraction for the KDE community. They should either work with #Kubuntu to deliver the latest Plasma desktop directly there, or pick another *existing* distro that's willing to ship up-to-date Plasma packages (Fedora? Arch? Pop!_OS?).
