@aral a lot of people are familiar with bit torrent, aren't they? i tend to go over people's heads when i start talking tech, but #p2p is rarely the confusing part ime. then again, what do i know? my peers are relatively tech savvy so i might be over-estimating the general person's understanding of words like p2p et al.

@h i think it would be interesting to target medium/small businesses with some #p2p productivity stuff, support, and hardware.

the #p2p bit is supposed to lower their infrastructure costs by using their desktops as infrastructure rather than outsourcing to the cloud. if they want custom stuff, we can offer that at a discount if they agree to copyleft licensing or charge the full market rate for custom development if they want to keep the "IP".

@frank87 #p2p with servers? why not build a *real* #p2p system where users can interact with each other directly? why the extra layer of control?

@frank87 technically all websites are federated. esp if you consider rss/atom feeds

the federated model has a lot of weaknesses tbh. it is technically decentralized, but it doesn't do much of anything to prevent re-centralization. nor does it do much in terms of load balancing.

what you really want is a proper #p2p system.

how this might work is left as an exercise to the reader.

@h what i'm hoping to enable with my relax project (#p2p app platform) is to move the hosting cost onto the users, rather than the developers. the cost per user is actually quite low, it just gets expensive when you have hundreds of thousands of users using your shit.

@marsxyz yup. my shit is mostly #p2p application libs (#relax). pmos is our upstream. we just add @heropunch branding and some meta packages to bake in the defaults we want.

@CobaltVelvet we don't have to agonize over past mistakes, we can just make new things that learn from the mistakes of the past. we don't even have to use browsers! of course, the web will be hard to dethrone, but that just means we have to make some really dope shit in order to compete.

i like to pretend that my overly ambitious, but actually quite casual side project will change something, but it probably wont. i'm doing this because #p2p and hardware are fun.
