My student Charlie Kiene spent 6mo with 2 groups of World of Warcraft raid guilds undergoing mergers. One merger led to a thriving community while the other led to complete collapse. In my #LibrePlanet2018 keynote (https://mako.cc/copyrighteous/libreplanet-2018-keynote) I argued that online collaborative production is shifting from social to market-based arrangements. This paper explores the implications. (As is clear in the talk, part of this paper's results motivated the whole argument!)

The paper was a team effort by Max Klein, Jinhao Zhao, Jianjun Ni, Isaac Johnson, myself, and Haiyi Zhu.

@mike_hales More to the point, I also think it's better than if we all had use some cooperatively run GMail alternative.

Being able to choose between many federated coop-GMails feels much more flexible & resilient to me.
