There are plenty of scandelous reasons to hate FB. I am not implying we dont have a right to hate them. I am just saying they are not to blame for the spread of fake news, that is on us as a people.

Before that it was chain e-mails though so I'm not sure social media is so much to blame as it is simply the medium of choice.
With that said I see no reason why people being allowed to gossip fake news would, inherently, cause an increase in fake news. A society of scholars likely wouldnt see this effect at all for example.

The other is that its the elites in Silicon Valley that are the issue. Most of the news agencies arent Silicon Valley Elites running the show, though it is Elites. The issue is far simpler than that... News is for-profit. That means they will do what makes them money and that is secondary to Truth or Honesty. Since people in the USA are all extremist they basically WANT bias, and what the paying public wants they get.

With that said Trump is legitimately a horrible president and that is true with or without Fake News making it look worse. But then again so was Obama and in some ways even worse than Trump. This isnt a justification of Trump but just an indication that American politicians tend to be shitty no matter what party they come from.

I simply dont see it as functionally or universally superior to anything else (though perhaps superior in specific use cases). Even PL as a whole is not superior to non-PL overall.
There are many classes of languages, they all shine under certain circumstances. Some shine a bit more often than others overall.

🎓 Dr. Freemo :jpf: 🇳🇱 (freemo@qoto.org)'s status on Saturday, 04-Jan-2020 11:39:14 UTC 🎓 Dr. Freemo :jpf: 🇳🇱 Well I wouldnt argue that point. Your going to be most effective in a language if it happens to be the language you have significantly more expiernce with. But that is also the result of selection bias and historic usage.
I generally find, as a professional of 3 decades in the CS field, that it only takes me a few months to become an expert in any one language. Over the course of a career it is trivial to become a complete expert in many dozens of languages if you invest the time into learning and applying them. At that point there isnt just one language that you are most expiernced with, you are an expert in many, so it is no longer the limiting factor.

🎓 Dr. Freemo :jpf: 🇳🇱 (freemo@qoto.org)'s status on Saturday, 04-Jan-2020 11:35:42 UTC 🎓 Dr. Freemo :jpf: 🇳🇱 To be fair the tune you are playing is also the tune I've heard from almost anyone that is the fan boy of any specific language, how their language is the good one because it reduces bugs or anything else.
No suprise these people also used their favorite language for "decades" and claim that as expiernce as to why it must be true.
I usually just read it as confirmation bias myself.
The truth is there are certain languages better suited for some tasks than others. Yes they reduce certain classes of bugs, they increase certain classes of other bugs. This doesnt make them equal it just means they are suited in cases where those classes of bugs are of more concern.
What I find almost entierly unhelpful in any discussion about languages is the one guy who is the expert on a language and puts it at the top of his fan list trying to tell everyone how his language of choice is universally superior. IT is completely blind to the nuance and plays entierly to personal biases.
But I agree, to each their own. You code what you have fun doing, as you should. ITs only when you claim your choice universally superior that it looses credibility in my eyes.

You can build one with nice code highlighting, project tree, the works.. But either it takes a lot of effort to get all the bits working, or it still falls short.
Even with a lot of time spent getting vim to where you want it spacemacs gives me all that out of the box and makes maining conrfiguration a breeze. Its hard for me to see any reason to go with vim over spacemacs at this point and I'm not sure I've seen a vim yet that has the nice powerline status bad spacemacs has.

I think one of the big factors that stopped me from using VIM more often was two fold: 1) Setup to get it working witht he basic features of a IDE were a pain 2) it is really ugly without enough at-a-glance useful info. Spacemacs solves both those problems.
The only thing I'm learning to do without right now are tabs for multiple files at the same time. Yea you can have buffers and even have them open side by side, so I'll probably make do. But multiple buffers feel like more of a mental effort to maintain than tabs.

If a choice in language is going to significantly effect that, even if just due to not having fun, then it should factor into your choice.
With that said I tend to get excited about the application, what it can do, what new algorithms I can invent. The language effects my pleasure for sure but its not the biggest factor for my happiness. I can easily pick a less enjoyable language and still be plenty motivated and get the job done if I like the idea.
