@unaspenser bullying is a tricky topic and merely moving from a monolithic and hierarchical system to a federated one does not make the problems of social relations go away. There is still squabbling and differences of all kinds.

One thing a federated system does do however is shift the power balance. In the silo model a small number of people get to control the majority and there is typically no recognizable governance. Mr Zuckerberg simply decides that he does not like a certain group, and then they are erased from his system. One man's morality imposed upon the world.

The federation allows for groups to exist independently. To form their own policies and governance. If you're ejected from one server you can probably join another, or start your own. When that happens it means that you don't necessarily lose contact with friends, because of the common protocol.

@unaspenser the federation is also the past of social media, and it has been difficult for the usual suspects to get any traction here. Advertisers. Mainstream politicians. Corporations. That might be because it was just too small for them to be bothered, but also in the federated model the architecture of the system makes it hard for them to get their usual stranglehold.

The silos are hierarchical. If you pay the right man then you can get a higher position and be able to spam or alter the timelines of millions of users. So far that hasn't happened in the federation, and if it did I expect it would be rejected. Like the body identifying and rejecting an invading pathogen.

In the past, the federation was mostly about the voices of the marginalized. The people who for one reason or another were rejected or censored by the silos, or who just never trusted them to begin with and so remained on the open web. The numbers are growing though and so the demographic will change. There are already complaints about that.

@dickypye yes, although that would be too close to actually democratic for the BBC and similar outlets to broadcast. My guess is that if the party leaders had to answer questions in an open forum they wouldn't fare very well and the range of issues would be much wider.

Which reminds me. In addition to expiring gnusocial/postActiv posts I should also expire any uploaded files.

@angristan I've had similar problems, but maybe on a smaller scale with single board computers. My solution is to expire posts with a configurable length of time (typically a few months). That prevents the database from becoming so large that it's difficult to back up or makes the system unstable.

"If you’re wondering how a government so weak, so unpopular and so obviously inept can nonetheless manage to crush the opposition, you’re wondering the right way. If you’re wondering how a nation can anticipate a landslide victory for the party in government while the majority of its people are angry, confused and deeply worried about the uncertain future they are facing, you’re not the only one. The answer is that Britain doesn’t do crypto-dictatorship with as much braggadocio as other nations I might mention, but we do it all the same. The answer is that British democracy is broken, and the pieces are on fire, and the people picking them up, the people trying to reassemble a fractured future for themselves in the shoddy rubble of this fucked-up country, will never work in Westminster."

@dickypye if possible it might be good to try to get some folks into the usual media circus (TV debates or whatever) and have them ask the candidates questions about UBI, technological unemployment, tax havens, collectivisation of infrastructure in a commons-based economy and so on. These topics are so far off their map that their masks may slip and they end up giving replies which really show their true allegiances.

@dickypye this is similar to what I tweeted to Novara. There is so little faith in the mainstream media and their irrelevant talking points that the GE might be an opportunity to promote other ideas.

!gnusocial If you're a GNU social server sysadmin, don't disable TLSv1.0 support and earlier on your webserver or Andstatus and Twidere won't work on Android versions prior to 4.4.2.
I just lost like a fucking month until I figured this out.

The UK general election. Well, I've registered to vote but the whole thing just makes me feel vaguely exasperated. It's like a parade of folks you don't want to have your name associated with.

    Theresa May

Declared the winner already by the media. Supposedly massive lead in the polls, though the polls usually get it wrong. Pioneered the Snooper's Charter. This is someone who is obsessed with knowing everyone's internet browsing history. That's the kind of calibre we're talking about here.

    Jeremy Corbyn

aka Corbs or The Corbynator. Almost universally despised by his own parliament colleges. Makes uninspiring speeches which enthuse nobody. Has no plans to overthrow the monarchy. Pretty certain to be replaced whether or not he wins.

    Tim Farron

aka Who? The Libdems hardly exist anymore after they were voted into the black hole of electoral oblivion in 2015. Libdems tend to be very similar to Conservatives, but with slightly differing opinions on some civil liberties issues.

    Paul Nuttall

Ukipper. Current number of MPs: zero. Expected number of MPs after the election: approximately zero. The BBC have been trying to promote UKIP in recent years, but without much success. Really, they're best forgotten.

    Caroline Lucas

Like the Ukippers, the Greens don't really stand much chance of anything. They have a single MP. Some of their policies are passable - things like UBI, which might improve the lot of the average prole - but their chances of being in any position to implement them are pretty negligible.
