But more seriously, rendered HTML should not be passed in ActivityVerbs or other endpoints. Only raw content. Rendered HTML should be internal to an instance so they can render it as desired - different instances may have different plugins and different desires about rendering, such as for example,

@deadsuperhero @gargron @donnerdrummel if you're concerned about the authenticity of posts a possible future feature might be signed posts - like signed email or git commits. A counter-argument to that might be that this merely moves the problem of validation to a different location. -

My guess is that from all this "free speech zone" aversion and the Berkley video that the right have tried to claim free speech as their own. Thing is though that the right have always hated free speech with a passion.
If you are scientifically minded an experiment you might not want to put to the test is to show up at some right wing rally and start listing the evils of capitalism, its endless failures and imperialist wars. You can declare yourself to be merely exercising free speech. Use a stopwatch app to time how many seconds your free speech is tolerated for. -

Looking at some of these blocklists the reasons are just plain silly. One reason is even given as "apparent free speech zone", and I notice they all seem to have it in for RainbowDash even though it doesn't federate.
Still, at least if such lists are published then users can draw their own conclusions. -

Sounds like there was another clash between pro and anti fascists at Berkley the other day. It's not all that clear whether any of it amounts to a hill of beans, but what it does perhaps indicate is that tensions within the society are rising and that politically educated non-state factions are vying for control of the streets. -

Freedom of speech always comes with freedom of association. My own personal problem with instance blocks isn't so much the block itself, but that people are doing them automatically, without vetting, and usually without even consulting their communities, so the people don't know what they're not seeing. That said I have always advocated a minimalist position when it comes to administration because it is the most practical position: the less you police, the less work you have to spend on policing it and the less social tension you create by doing so. People are generally adults here, they can work out their differences themselves without intervention for the most part.
