@sonya imho having the admin block other servers in the fediverse without telling their users is rather unethical. I think users can decide for themselves who they do or don't want to interact with. There can be exceptions to this in the case of servers hosting illegal content. -

@takeshitakenji @maiyannah I had a brief stint with running Mastodon on a 2 GB Scaleway ARM server and it used like 1.8 GB of ram. -

@hobbsc It's difficult not to end up funding the war machine, but the current messed up nature of US politics probably means that there will be a transition to something else before long. The current administration, if you read the tweets, does seem certifiably insane and that's bound to lead to decisions which eventually pull the rug from underneath them.
Also there are general trends going on in the global economy which make business as usual less likely in future. For instance, the decoupling of employment from productivity and the vanishing middle class jobs. Governments are struggling to "control the message" as they did in the last century with broadcast media, and the mass surveillance is their attempt at regaining control but it's far from clear that they'll succeed.
So the kind of world your son will inherit is likely to be turbulent, but out of that there may be opportunities to really push things in a different direction. Freedom is a constant struggle. -

@maloki it can be in some cases, but these days blocking the domain name is more reliable because few people have static IPv4 addresses anymore. On !Freedombone there's an option in the control panel to block domain names at the iptables level if that's required. -

@radiolaria This is why self-hosting is a good idea. Also when there are laws pertaining to logs I would scrutinize them carefully to see precisely what is being mandated and for how long and under what conditions disclosure can take place. Often the people making those laws are technically incompetent and so don't really know what data they want. -
