    This could probably be alleviated by better user onboarding. You could explain / visually demonstrate the concept to users as they sign up, and even encourage a few random remote accounts to follow.

    @sulman The main thing I like about GNU/Linux is that I don't really have to accept anything. I can uninstall or replace things I don't want or need.

    systemd I don't mind. From a user point of view I find it easier to deal with and simpler to make daemons. There's far less boilerplate than the older init system. Looking at the code it's not all that monolithic either.

    @igor I was using it occasionally at work last year, but the MATE version. Ubuntu is still a pretty good option for the average user, but in my case I wanted to move to fully free distros.

    @deadsuperhero I think blocking or muting should be handled at the user level within the remit of privacy controls. Ideally admins shouldn't be making blocking decisions for users unless there's a compelling legal reason for that. It's also why I think the optimum situation is lots of small servers with a few users each rather than a few giant ones with thousands of users.

    @kitredgrave I completely expect that 99.9% of them will leave within a few days. Celebs want the attention of the masses and currently they're not going to get that in the fediverse, no matter how good the UI is.

    The main victory in these cases is getting the idea out there that the fediverse exists. I expect it to grow slowly and the problems in the silos to increase to a point where they decline in popularity.
