Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2017 13:11:03 UTC Bob Mottram That is, rate limits at the firewall level. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2017 13:08:34 UTC Bob Mottram So I've re-introduced rate limiting on !Freedombone to hopefully provide better DDoS protection. I can do something similar for the !postActiv debian install script.
The reason why I took out the rate limits originally is no longer relevant, and was Beaglebone Black specific. When I was first using it, kernel support was still in development and removing rate limits was part of a process of elimination for related bugs. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2017 13:04:51 UTC Bob Mottram @jd @adam the thing about these government-type things is that they usually have commercial implications. It may be better to consider governments and corporations to be the same entity with aligned interests. Different heads of the capitalist hydra. So some new rule blocks competition, generates new commercial activity (rented/burner laptops, etc). More rigging of the system by the same folks. The usual neolib game. -
Maiyannah Bishop (maiyannah@plateia.org)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2017 11:42:12 UTC Maiyannah Bishop One thing I have noticed about one instance - pawoo or its userbase seem to be creating completely empty accounts on remote servers just to try to pull content from pawoo there, I have just deleted over a thousand accounts on HLA and Plateia which only existed to try to bring content across our server block. Β Be aware, fediverse admins! -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2017 11:36:45 UTC Bob Mottram @maiyannah @sina I'll look into it. I'm pretty sure in early versions of !Freedombone I had iptables rate limits, but took them out when trying to fix instabilities which were probably actually kernel issues. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2017 11:13:40 UTC Bob Mottram @maiyannah @sina I have rate limits on the nginx side and I think it can also be done at the firewall level -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2017 11:01:14 UTC Bob Mottram @schestowitz !LineageOS might work on some of those u-phones. It's a shame that it's getting dropped, but I'm sure there will be other attempts to get GNU/Linux onto phones. There is SailfishOS, which I havn't tried. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2017 10:35:32 UTC Bob Mottram @tomas and as internet security slowly improves implanting the end points, via whatever method, will be increasingly attractive to the usual suspects. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2017 09:42:14 UTC Bob Mottram @orionwl yes, might boost low end laptop sales. Hmmm, I wonder who lobbied for these bans. There's a chin-scratcher. -

Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2017 08:53:19 UTC Bob Mottram So with all these laptop bans on aircraft I expect more international travelers will be going by ship or rail. Also it will create a trade in rental laptops for travelers, with all the security implications which go along with that. -

1. how about: "if you're not paying for it, there's a good chance you're the product"
2. we really have to start making #FLOSS users understand they *need* to support the software they're using financially even if there is no upfront price tag.
