@freemo That is very nice, I like t ooffer a sympathetic ear as well. I know it's hard, have been thru it before.

Quite difficult for people to get treatment in many places, long delays before you can see a doctor.

Listening does help. Well done, friend.

It is Nice to have a Forum as part of our QOTO instance group of services. Each service has its own focus, and Discourse is a nice way to keep conversations visible for longer times.

    * QOTO's Discourse Forum is at https://discourse.qoto.org/

Our posts in Mastodon are still here, but buried under many more we add to our profiles daily, while here a discussion has a more visible "Home".

    * We can refer to threads we post here, helping new users, and ourselves at the same time. No more "I did write something about that...", or similar.

    * We have emojis, text formatting with Bold and Italic, Images, attachments and more.

    * To get started or to refresh your skills, learn some new ones and make your posts prettier - How about Reading the Friendly Manual?

    * RTFM has always been a recommendation in tech and science circles.

The developers team at Discourse created a New User Guide.

    It's located at : https://meta.discourse.org/t/discourse-new-user-guide/96331

No snooping at cartoons while you are at it, lol.

I used to tel my students I was going to put a 3 or 4 foot high banner at the front of class, over blackboard. One word.

    F O C U S.

Used to call and mention it as the 'F'word. they always had chuckles, by association with the other, bad F word.

To finalize, all of these points above are my personal opinions, I believe they allign with the QOTO mission statement and site policies.

I have been a moderator in various sites in the past, mostly Forums, starting the process as an interested user and acting the ways I suggested above, being recognized as a valued Contributor, and eventually being invited into Staff positions.

I have time and enjoy my activity in the Fediverse, have volunteered for the position now open in the December 2019 Moderator Nominations and would be grateful for your support if you feel I might be a good Staff member here.

The Discourse Forum for Nominations is at : https://discourse.qoto.org/t/nomination-for-moderator-december-2019/110

...or you can consider suggesting any names here or via Direct Message to our Administrator, Dr Freeman, @freemo

Thank you for reading this, please feel free to comment in this thread, your input is important.

    1. Nomination for Moderator, December 2019
Today we are beginning a nomination for #QOTOs next moderator πŸŽ‰ Same rules as last time: Basically it works like this, any one of you can nominate someone from QOTO. The only restriction is the person you nominate must be an n posting account, active for at least the last month. You can even nominate yourself, but it usually looks better if you can get one or more people to nominate you, symbolically speaking. The moderators will then select the finalists which if there is a tie the comm...

QOTO Moderator Nomination Process - Notes

This month we have a process for nominating candidates for Moderator position here at QOTO.org. It is an important one, and I would like to post a few notes and thoughts about it.

    1. First of all, it's surprising how open and transparent the process of Staff selection is here; In most cases, these discussions are hel In Camera, by existing site staff (moderators and administrators), sometimes subject to a vote between them, sometimes with Admins having the final decision, after accepting input.

Here, it's done in the public Feed, the posts are also federated with other instances. And the nomination process is open to participation by any current user in QOTO. (an election should ensue, if more than one person is nominated; otherwise, it's considered hors-concours, and the nominated person gets the job)

    2. Nomination is currently done via a post in the QOTO Discourse forum (a less known and used feature of the community), you will need to register an account there as it's different software that Mastodon running here.

As an alternative, you could post a Mastodon post, and declare your support for any user here you see as a good candidate, include the person via their @ tag name, and include @freemo, our system admin so he won't miss it.

    1. Mastodon & Fediverse: Explained
      from Simply Explained - Savjee
Mastodon is a "federated" social network that works like Twitter. It puts the control of data into the user's hands, not in a single corporation. Mastodon uses ActivityPub to make sure that each Mastodon instance can reach the others. ActivityPub is also implemented by other applications such as PeerTube and Plume. This is what makes up the *Fediverse*: a collection of social networks that function as a single one.

Visited Jeff's blog earlier this morning, to see a poem he linked to, a nice one.

Noticed a link to other post, and it's a lovely article - about operating a crypto mining at home, with off the shelf components. Which paid for itself nicely, despite what we hear about server farms being unbeatable (which is true for Bit Coin, BTC)

His setup was specifically for mining Ether, and by nature that process benefit systems using Graphics cards for the processing.

Very cool project! Glad it worked out, the hardware is exquisite. He explains it well too. πŸŽ…

@freemo I remember those days well. My first PC was an IBM clone, 286 a6 MHz, the processor was fast for the time. Not an Intel part, they had moved on to promoting the newer and higher profit 386 gen processors.

I also bought and installed the math coprocessor for my machine. Needed since I wanted to use AutoCAD, and it required it.

So I ordered a 287 Intel coprocessor. It was about $300 CAD at the time, early 1991 probably. Would be a lot more today with inflation accounted for, and I was worried of damaging it during installation.

Turns out it did not work. I don't remember exactly what the symptom was, but not good. I had a $300 part, bought mail order, and might be stuck with it. 😟

The only thing I would add is spell out the STEM acronym, as people might have found QOTO simply from it's prominent position on joinmastodon.org's Instance list / Join page - and not realize that this is not a typical, general audience focused server.

Just found a couple of disgusting posts here in our lounge.

Porn, actually, with animated gifs and disgusting text.

Everyone, if you see any posts are clearly WRONG, considering what QOTO is, please REPORT to mods so it can be taken down ASAP.

Here's an example of how to do it (the post in the snapshot is not that bad, just an example).

    - Click on the 3 dots at the bottom of the post.

    - a popup menu has the options you can use. Select REPORT at the bottom, a new window will pop up, fill in WHY the post is not appropriate (hate, crime, etc) and send it in.

    Thank you! πŸ˜‰

"Birth order refers to the order a child is born in their family; first-born and second-born are examples. Birth order is often believed to have a profound and lasting effect on psychological development. This assertion has been repeatedly challenged.[1] Recent research has consistently found that earlier born children score slightly higher on average on measures of intelligence, but has found zero, or almost zero, robust effect of birth order on personality.[2] Nevertheless, the notion that birth-order significantly influences personality continues to have a strong presence in pop psychology and popular culture.[3][4] " from:
