@freemo
Wonderful.
I thank the stars who guided me here, a brand new user in fediverse very recently, and finding my home at a place with this very essential control -- I had noted it and used it to block an instance I object to already, days ago. Made a public post and explained it to other users too, because I think it's a great tool to keep things sane.
Kudos, Dr Freemo. This is first class work. π₯

Part of the problem, a big one, is the parent's themselves being frayed and distracted by incessant media and notifications, imo.
It is a real concern indeed. WE have too much information, and struggle to cope. A lot of it is worthless, some might say planted for distracting people from more serious issues.
Sometimes it seems that things would improve if we lost some of the current deluge, massive communications overload.
Great article on this from The Atlantic!!

@freemo
Some great photos too...

@qoto I hope the previous post made sense? It was already in fact Boosted and distributed to that usergroup (which could contain any number of users), everyone following it will get notified and see it. Cool.
- Oh, I want a Private group! π Maybe in the future extra features will be added. For now, want a sec group? CREATE IT and DON'T tell anyone other than the intended users. Keep it hush hush and you get some privacy,
(I think; it might show up on the local feed possibly? This is all new to me too, here trying to explain it to you)
How About Creating a NEW Group?
- reading that same screen above (again, it's located at : https://gup.pe/u/guppegroups )
we see a reference to :
"Create other groups by searching for or tagging @yourGroupName"
OK - so say we want a new qoto-bikers group. We are all cyclists, and plan some rides, or maybe it's a motorbike group. Let's make it happen!
- What group name? You decide. Keep it Simple. Short. Memorable. Obvious if you can!
ok, how about qoto-bikers? π
Sure!
- This will be done from inside you own Home -- your own instance, in my case, this is qoto.org.
- We enter the new Group name we decided on into the SEARCH box, on the top Left corner of the web page (or in the search box in your mobile app)
On the screen below you can see the NEW @group_name@instance_name already typed in. Hit enter and it goes to work!
Will show the result in the next post.
If you open that link, you will land on a new tab and page, with some cryptic instructions (will explain then soon) and an input box.
What to do here?
- if you wanted to JOIN an EXISTING group, say QOTO's (which I created a few minutes ago), you would need to know the Group_name@Instance.name to enter it there. On my example, it would be : qoto@gup.pe
- Done that? It will redirect you to a page, where you will see the Group Bot profile. Click on the "FOLLOW"button, and you will be ADDED to this particular group.
- Any posts made anywhere in fediverse afterwards, and that include the @qoto attibution (username) will be Copied to the Bot there.
And the bot will Boost and send it out to ALL the people Following this particular list. π
Screenshot below shows this first entry point into Guppe. (I will describe How To Create a New Group on next post)
@requrious Req, I am a new user both on fediverse and qoto.org, which I did find via the listing you are discussing here.
I have been involved in what today we call social networking sicne the early 90s, via local BBSes and Fidonet. (I actually was surprised by the orgazational structure here, which closely resembles FN)
It's been only one week for me, but I have amybe over 500 posts, all from my qoto account. I have not seen any posts originating or appearing in qoto's Local feed that were rude, disrespectful, obnoxious or inapropriate. (and I have been a mod in different places and systems over the years.)
I think @freemo is doing a good job and the instance is growing. It does have a more open policy than other instances I had visited, where posting something like a Political newspaper snippet/link requires a Content Warning, which dismayed me (and I wouldn't personally participate there).
Qoto has been getting a number of new users and growing. Many come in after finding it via the page you referred to, and I think they are well served at that instance.
I am not at this point staff, mod or admin at the site, but support the sys admin and the listing of the instance as a satisfied user.
The final paragraph of the Rules section summarizes well, I think, the local policy, and I quote:
"We are all adults here, act like it. Despite our belief in freedom of expression (free speech) we want to create a space where people are respectful to each other. Don't disrespect people; if they disrespect you then block them and move on. If we get a report on one of our users then an administrator will reach out to the parties involved and try to mediate a peaceful resolution. We will talk it through like mature adults. Lets remember there is a person at the other end of the screen, if we can be mature in real life we can do it here too."
Thank you.
** Things I would like to see in Fediverse and Mastodon:
- When Boosting a post, the option to add a note or comment at the top (like it's possible when retweeting)
- When people reply to a thread, that all people who posted on it so far got notified; sometimes threads branch off by posters removing attributions or replying only to one poster. It would be more productive if all saw it, imo.
- in a more distant future, the amount of content will be so large that it will be hard to follow on chronological timelines, all posts into one big humongous Feed. (think Facebook?)
Hashtags alone are not much of a separation, although they might helpf find something. Ideally, I would think something like the usenet newsgroups would tidy things up nicer.
- If people understood that hashtags are not Cutesy decorations and did not abuse them like is common in certain (insta) places, Searching with Useful hashes would be sped up.
All those words marked one by one with hashes are typically K Kardashian style, very gauche imo.
@freemo @Surasanji @Jastej @arteteco @admin I recalled having making a post with a screenshot, showing Jastej how to Mute an account, or even block a whole instance/domain from his feed.
Found it - and it's worth looking at. I have used this myself to block a domain I object to.
"Boliviaβs Lithium resources are estimated to be at the level of 9 million tons (USGS), highest in the world as per individual country and 22% of the worldβs total. This is significantly more than the second- and third-placed Chile and Argentina, which hold 18% and 16% of the global total resources respectively. The Bolivian government claims that it has 70% of the worldβs lithium reserves and the most optimistic estimation claims there is 140 million tons of lithium in Salar de Uyuni."

@freemo That is huge growth, and the system is running smoothly. Well done. :thumbsup_hmn_g1:
Yes, I agree that you are doing great.
I followed a thread at another instance earlier this morning, and DMed a user there who was looking for longer post limits among other things. He was grateful and should be coming check out qoto soon.
Lucky for me I found qoto right off the bat, after reading the Mastodon listing of instances and liking what I saw in the qoto listing.
The Northern latitudes is where the impact of climate change, temperatures raising is showing most clearly.
The permafrost, frozen soil under very large areas of Siberia, Alaska, Northern Canada is starting to melt, releasing a lot of water in the Spring (with floods being worse), buildings badly affected by softer soil underneath their foundations.
Gas and Oil pipelines with hundreds of kilometers lengths are built on those regions, and can be damaged by shifting soils. Major leaks can result.
The melting permafrost also leads to ancient vegetation in it starting to rot, and releasing vast quantities of CO2 and other gases, as well as noxious rotting smells.
Saw a really good report on the Washington post on this subject :

Indeed, Qoto.org deserves Kudos and sets an example. Excelent work.
@inditoot @freemo @Karthikdeva @Full_marx @iakshay
That is disgusting, and this kind of thing is why people tend to not want to even be in the same room with someone with different or opposing views. π
It's a question of decency, no matter what politics you favour. A decent human being wouldn't be doing that just to spite someone else.
I am left wing and very happy with our conversation here, but I do find places like gab.com really annoying. π
@freemo @Karthikdeva @Full_marx @iakshay
I found a copy of BBS The Documentary on Youtube. DVDs are no longer available, for now.
@freemo You are very welcome. π
I have been seeing and feeling many similarities between the fediverse and my first experience with networking, way back in the early 90s.
Back then, all we had were BBSes, phone lines and 2400 bps modems, but there was an international network linking many of them already - FidoNet.
FidoNet had as one of its core principles something similar to your approach here:
- Thou Shall not be Annoying.
immediately followed by the corolary:
- Thou Shall not be Easily Annoyed. π
Words of wisdom to live by!
@freemo @Karthikdeva @Full_marx @iakshay Wonderful post and initiative! Thank you!
@freemo Here in Canada the usual reference is to "South Asian" people. There's also "South East Asian" for the region previously called Indochina (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, etc). Asia is a huge area, tremendous spread North to South as well - Siberia to Sri Lanka all are part of.
