@grmpyoldman Darn! I made !coffee 30 minutes ago, and left it on the counter. Now it's cold. At least it's strong. -

Saddened to learn Andrew Telegdi has died. A principled MP, always looked out for the best interests of his constituents. -

That was a pretty good video on flameless heaters. And the jingoism wasn't overwhelming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu6txjwIOzU -

To reply to a post in !GNUsocial you have to find a copy of it in your own instance. Older versions of !StatusNet pointed both the datetime URL and the conversations URL to the originating instance; I think newer !GNUsocial code has fixed that. As a workaround you can 'favorite' the notice, then it shows up under the "Popular" menu item https://status.obscuritus.ca/favorited/ Or you can do it the hard way and search through the DB for your local notice URL, type that into a browser, then reply from there. -

@hobbsc Next time you're out, could you take video of preparing an MRE? I have no idea what "flameless heaters" are, f'instance. And if you narrate it, the sound track is reusable as an !HPR episode :=) -

@musicman I recommend you join some groups. You'll receive notices that others post to the group, and others will see the notices that you post to the group http://www.skilledtests.com/wiki/List_of_federated_GNU_social_groups -

@bobjonkman brilliant, thanks! Dates in the first page are confusing (all in the past?); the second sounds like it's only software. But both will be a good starting point to find out more. :) -

Great info - I have plans for plying with #LED lighting myself but have never soldered anything. Thinking doing a course (if there is such a thing) might save me some time (and messy mistakes) :) -

#Twitter and #Facebook are about the least "open, transparent" organizations I can think of (well, also Google, LinkedIn, Yahoo, Microsoft, and all other members of the #Free-As-In-Gratis #But-We-Own-Your-Data spectrum). Openness and Transparency are orthogonal to Federation, although the Closed, Proprietary corporations are also the ones least likely to federate. You raise an interesting point about !Fediverse instances placing commercial advertising on their instances, and incurring all the surveillance and tracking issues of commercial advertising agencies. I would not want my instance to participate in their federation -- so, we need a method to block other instances, whether for NSFW reasons, commercialization and surveillance concerns, or any other reason. Hey, @MMN: Another !GNUsocial #FeatureRequest! -

Agreed, the #WhatsApp "issue" is not a bug, it's there by design. But a designer vulnerability is still a vulnerability. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/01/google-launches-key-transparency-while-tradeoff-whatsapp-called-backdoor !crypto -

!GNUsocial was never a platform for private and secure communication. It is a platform for open, transparent communication free from the commercial advertising agencies. !Decentralife -

@mmn I'd be happier with full group federation, but I'll settle for fully-qualified group names. Group federation should exist because it's a mechanism for addressing multiple recipients, similar to the way a !GNUsocial instance is a way to host multiple participants.
