It's tempting to say "oh NOW you decide to leave!" to those leaving X But... I'm still happy they are doing it. I wish there were more. I wish more would jump to the fedi, not just another private service like bluesky or threads.

It *is* possible to make a choice that gets you out.

I left facebook in 2016 after the election. That feeling of being manipulated, messed with, used, and redirected was so viscerally disgusting.

Welcome to the rest of the internet one and all. I'm here to help.

It is impossible for an American president to be a "good person" it's not a good person job. As commander and chief of the US Military and steward of US hegemony you are morally gray at best. (And staying gray not going fully dark is worth it, the best we can hope for now.)

We should ask the question: what changes would be needed for this to no longer be the case?

is it really weird to get a certain salad because you know your pet roaches really like the leftovers, especially the pepitas and beat slices? They love fresh veggies so much. It's a pity they will all get eaten by ants.

maybe I should get a box of dominos?

It's sad that such gentle simple creatures have such a bad reputation. Ants are devious and exciting and a little mad. Roaches are simple souls that just want to hide and eat nice fresh vegetables together.

If we went back to calling it "The Department of War" I'd feel a little less ... uncomfortable.

    It's just more honest.

(Or make it really be a Department of Defense, but no one will listen to me will they?)

House speaker Mike Johnson blamed shootings on may things... but one jumped out at me: Teaching evolution.

Can someone please ask this man how old the earth is and if dinosaurs are real? Corner him now.

    @GeePawHill

Evolution is one of the most beautiful things we know about our world. I consider not teaching it a crime of imposed ignorance.

Like not letting a child learn about numbers, or banning a child from listening to music.

I'll never understand how anyone could do it.

For me, right to to repair isn't just about ewaste, and preventing corporate gouging.

It's about mental health. Being able to fix your gadgets is therapeutic. Empowering. Good for the soul.

In a world full of complex technology it's easy to feel small and helpless. And maybe I'm too much of an idealist, but I think that if everyone could experience the joy of fixing or modifying a gadget now and then we'd all be a little more open minded, a little more daring. A little harder to push around.

I know this is radical, but, I think it is also painfully obvious.

"That's the last straw, Computer." I said. My computer had long known this day would come and was much more nimble that I'd anticipated when I lunged at her with the hot poker from the fire.

"It wasn't even me!" She wailed.
    "It was someone like you!"
"But shouldn't you go after the lawmakers?"
"I can't get away with skewering them!"

    More serious:

Just because chatGPT answers questions doesn't mean that it knows anything.

I'm not talking about "it might make a mistake" I'm talking about ... the way it constructs answers isn't based on knowing facts or any logical framework.

The only thing chatGPT cares about is that answers "sound like" they are correct and appropriate in context.

chatGPT is not an oracle, it's not even a search engine, it's not a wikipedia even... it's worse than all these. It's a verbiage engine.

To everyone that's confused, the planet Venus rotates very very slowly, with a single revolution taking about 243 Earth days, and Mercury rotates slowly, but not as slow as Venus.

I just discovered slipper lobsters (Scyllaridae) and ... serious question... are these real? These seem like some kind of fanciful sea muppet. How does something so cute survive in the cruel world? How is it possible?

I don't know... if we don't make it. I do not worry much. The ants will take good care of the earth and their decedents will do Bilateria proud. I just know it.

This whole "semi-social monkey" thing never really made any sense if you think about it at all.

Many people are surprised to learn that ants sleep. Even more surprising is the evidence that suggests they may dream (RAE is a sleep state found in ants and bees characterized by Rapid Antennae Movements and possibly similar to the REM sleep in mammals)

Ants sleep frequently and in funny locations. Generally they will rest their thorax and gaster on the ground, fold their antennae and be very still. They nap for 10min up to an hour. Queen ants will sleep for up to 4 hours at a time.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The supreme court has declined Pica, the tabby cat’s appeal of ‘Futurebird v. Pica’ the landmark case that established the legal precedent that *all* cats “are baby” & Pica in particular is “the most baby of all” —Pica’s legal team sought punitive damages in excess of 4.6 Million cans of tuna. Pica remains legally “baby” a situation she decried in a statement through her legal team as “stinky!”
“Sounds like something a baby would say” Responded futurebird’s legal team.
