@bradfonseca #AndStatus v.36.05 released to Production four days ago, it's available at Google Play and is expected at F-Droid...

#AndStatus v.36.04 beta "Activities instead of messages, and enhancements of Notifications" is published at an Open Beta testing channel, see https://github.com/andstatus/andstatus/issues/456
In this beta release:
1. Translations for 6 new languages added and several existing updated. Many thanks to all volunteer translators making this work at https://crowdin.com/project/andstatus BTW it's not too late to complete what's not done yet, please check that site.
2. Fixed a crash in Android 8, when syncing occurred in a background. This was the only problem reported during previous two weeks of beta testing, which confirms my observations that AndStatus is close to be released.

* messages in conversations now are shown even they are not replies to other messages
* syncing in Android Doze mode improved.

@hier So far no security updates of #AndStatus itself were ever needed. All security-related changes were caused by changes at a server side, which required network protocol changes for client applications including AndStatus.
I don't think similar protocol changes will be implemented in older versions of AndStatus.
What you may really need are security updates for Android firmware on your device. -

What's new:
1. This is a major change of AndStatus, which is available for Android 7.0+ devices only and which may require quite a long database upgrade on the first run after the upgrade.
2. The whole internal data model of the application has changed from working with "messages" to working with "activities", allowing to present social networks in a richer way and to solve many old problems. E.g. after reblogging of a message the message doesn't "jump" to the top of a timeline, as before: now you see a new "Reblog action" for this message at the top the timeline.
The same for Like/Favorite and Follow/"Stop following" actions.
Usage of this feature to its full potential requires its support in a Social network. As of now only Pump.io fully supports activities; Mastodon sends activities in its "Notifications" timeline only.
For legacy server timelines that contain messages only, AndStatus also presents Reblogs as activities, because a "Reblog" _is_ an action even in "Twitter-like" implementations. "Messages" from legacy timelines are interpreted as Update actions of these messages.
3. Direct messages and timelines renamed to Private with corresponding changes in their content.
4. "Notifications" timeline added, which shows activities that are configured to be notified about in AndStatus Settings -> Notifications. You can be notified about: Followers, Favorites, Mentions, Reblogs, unset messages in the Outbox and about Private messages.
5. Notifications, shown in Android Notification area and in the AndStatus Widget, are not forgotten anymore. These notifications are persisted even after device reboot. Notifications are reset when a User opens correspondent timeline e.g. by clicking on the Notification or a Widget. #367 and #398

6.For Twitter messages character limit increased up to 280 characters. #158

@hier Current version of #AndStatus is 35.06, and it can be used for Android devices v.4.4+ as long as you need.
Next version will be for newer devices/firmware, and this is natural cause of software evolution.
Sadly, but I also had to buy new tablet for myself in order to use newer applications... -

@xrevan86 In short, the decision to switch to #Android 7.0 minimum was made to motivate me, @yvolk - developer of #AndStatus, to continue active improvement of this #OpenSource application.
I am a professional Java/Scala developer, and as a majority in our profession I need to keep my skills up-to-date. Starting from Android 7, developers can use all new and trending features of Java 8 and modern application approaches, including functional programming. Especially after mastering #Scala I simply cannot use outdated language patterns... As one of my colleagues put it: I simply cannot afford writing for free something that is not a "Cutting edge".
I think that this is not bad for all of us in the long run?! -

@nikoofdeath Thanks. Hope that you have at least Android 7.0, because upcoming release of #AndStatus won't support older firmware.
BTW in Android 8.1 news I read that this newest version of #Android could be run on devices with only 1GB or RAM... -

This is wrong. #OStatus is a server-to-server protocol, #AndStatus connects to servers using server-to-client protocols. This is why AndStatus doesn't know and doesn't depend on OStatus protocol.
Moreover, #Mastodon 's client-to-server protocol is still based on outdated Twitter like API, not on #ActivityPub, unfortunately.

@6gain I would recommend to hide the buttons completely in Settings -> Timeline , and use context menu (tap a message, where it has no links) -

@jark Reviewing and improving #ActivityPub specification is not about coding/programming. It's about analysis and modeling. But my experience shows that it's hard to notice problems and mistakes in such documents, until you don't try to start actually using it in practise, in this case - starting to implement some application using this specification OR starting to adapt this specification, as an Analyst, for some concrete application. This way you will read every phrase, some of them - many times...

By the way, you can create a backup of #AndStatus data, including accounts (but without images) in Settings -> Storage, then reinstall AndStatus and do any tests, and after all your tests reinstall again and Restore that backup on the first launch of AndStatus. This is why I personally still use the same AndStatus's database that I created several years ago: I restore the last backup in a case of problems... -

@regentaenzer I added "quit.im" Social network to #AndStatus by typing just "quit.im" and pressing Add button.
Then I tried to add an account to that Social network not han having correct credentials: I got "401 Unathorized" error message, as expected.
Then I registered at quit.im and tried to add this new account: it was successfully added, no freezing or restarts.
