Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Saturday, 10-Mar-2018 14:04:18 UTC Hallå Kitteh Slack people are closing down their XMPP and IRC gateways. The embrace period is over, now moving over to extinguish.
They're so intent on owning your user experience that you can't even read the announcement without signing in.

I have a Slack account, so here's the lede:
> Saying goodbye to Slack’s IRC and XMPP gateways
> As Slack has evolved over the years, we’ve built features and capabilities — like Shared Channels, Threads, and emoji reactions (to name a few) — that the IRC and XMPP gateways aren’t able to handle. Our priority is to provide a secure and high-quality experience across all platforms, and so the time has come to close the gateways.
Then it goes on about their great screen reader support, and how their Real Time Message and Events APIs can be used instead of writing IRC bots.

I heard in a presentation the other day that when assembler came out, a lot of programmers felt it put too much distance between you and the machine. If you didn't know exactly which bits went where, how could you reuse opcodes as data when they happened to coincide? -

Christine Lemmer-Webber (cwebber@octodon.social)'s status on Monday, 11-Sep-2017 15:33:39 UTC Christine Lemmer-Webber BTW, @gargron @mmn and I had talked about making a "joint statement" along these lines a few days ago when hostility between "the federation camps" seemed at its peak.
If the lead dev of GNU Social, the lead dev of Mastodon, and a co-editor of ActivityPub don't want to see open hostility and fighting over this, that should be a good sign to you that this is not a "war" of any kind.
Let's work together, and at the very least, be the best person *we* can in open dialogue. Assume good faith.

Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Tuesday, 05-Sep-2017 07:37:19 UTC Hallå Kitteh @cwebber The way I hear it, it was there. All the way from "Dude, that's not a good way to do it, it will break assumption X" only, to "I could help you design this part".
But @gargron was in too much of a hurry to get his features in, and preferred "here's how I read the [woefully incomplete and outdated] specs" over "here's how the installed base actually uses these protocols". Now people in the old community are burned out on trying to get things synced up.
There's a lot of mudslinging both ways, and people have all kinds of weird opinions about Mastodon and Gargron, but a lot of people on the Mastodon side seem to think "They just hate our freedom from abuse!", and that's not how it went down.
OStatus as practiced hasn't been at a standstill since 2013, there is an admin community that has added little fixes here and there, coordinating with each other, and Mastodon development hasn't been run in that collaborative way, it has been a move-fast-and-break-things effort. -

Kabuki Fox & Security Theater (kellerfuchs@vulpine.club)'s status on Sunday, 02-Jul-2017 01:39:57 UTC Kabuki Fox & Security Theater OK, I have no words for this: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/6237
If your username doesn't match what Poettering expects usernames to be (and doesn't seem to be documented anywhere, but `[a-zA-Z]+` is *probably* safe?), then systemd will happily run your user services as root.
Reply: not-a-bug, don't use “invalid usernames”...
Paging @KitRedgrave, @mwlucas and @phessler for hilarity.
