@eff only secret chats are E2EE, normal direct chats are client-server encryption only. But as far as I remember Telegram's servers have those chats encrypted and operators do not have the decryption keys available to them, so they can't just go looking at people's private chats.
@eff Google is really an ad-based business itself and there is no way they can actually go against that, despite all thee well-meaning words and PR - it's their bread and butter. Maybe they should not be in the browser business at all.
Oh, Zot! Nomadic Identity is Coming to ActivityPub: This could change the Fediverse forever
Years before there was Mastodon and even ActivityPub, there was Mike Macgirvin who created the Zot protocol, which Hubzilla runs on. One of Hubzilla’s most amazing features (apart from also integrating with Activity and the Fediverse, and having cha ...continues
Bridgy Fed connects your web site to Mastodon and the Fediverse (and possibly Bluesky and Nostr later)
Bridgy Fed turns your web site into its own Fediverse account, visible in Mastodon and beyond. You can post, reply, like, repost, and follow Fediverse accounts by posting on your site with microformats2 and sending webmentions. Bridgy Fed translates those pos ...continues
@dynamic you can try https://dir.friendica.social/servers. If you visit the server instance just click on the i for information button, usually at top right of screen and it has a list of installed addons/apps shown - mine shows at https://squeet.me/friendica. See RSS not listed separately.
I followed my RSS feed as a contact, and then chose to mirror its posts as my own feed. That's how I'm getting Friendica to show my posts in full text.
@dynamic yes thing is Mastodon is only short text and readers have to click on my website link to read the fuller comments etc. Following my Friendica feed is the full text. Friendica also has integrations outside of just ActivityPub.
But I did videos about each platform, so used them extensively for research. I auto post though from my WP blog to all networks.
On instances, see what they enable or not eg. RSS posting, space limits, etc.
@dynamic nope they are optional extension or modules that admins choose to activate. Some can cause a lot of traffic, or others can be abused by spam bots, etc. So in my case I specifically looked for RSS enabled. But it is something to just compare between instances.
Postmarks is a decentralised self-hosted Fediverse successor to the old del.ici.us bookmarking service
The successor to Web 2.0 bookmarking site del.icio.us is here, but this time, it’s built for the open web and the Fediverse — the decentralized collection of social networks that includes the Twitter/X competitor Mastodon and others. Portland-area web develop ...continues
@eff I can understand using it for finding a currently sought vehicle, but if its not a match, the data should be erased within a day to protect innocent citizens.
All in all, KeePassXC definitely earns mention among the best password managers, though it comes with some sizable asterisks. The biggest one is that as an open-source product, it may be free, but it also lacks the polish of many industry leaders. As such, it ...continues
My video I did about 2 yrs back about #Mastodon at https://youtu.be/Fk-uujZQZFE may be useful to new users where I cover: * how to choose an instance * how to post * how to filter and control what you see in your feed * Local vs Federated feeds * some of the settings you can change * etc
@eff Russia had actually been testing their own isolated Internet about a year ago as I recall… obviously preparing for a day when they could be cut off.
