I seem to have found a bit of a running theme of alternating between instances new and old, and today's instance for #buildingtheroads is one of the oldest: quitter.se
Run by En Kompis Kompis, a swedish non-profit organization, quitter.se is one of the beneficiaries of donations thereto. As to how to describe quitter.se, I am at a bit of a loss - pretty much every GNU social or postActiv instance that uses the qvitter theme owes its much of its layout and features to this elder instance, and it has had a thriving community for many years, having been established years and years ago, as well as the entry doorstop into which many people found their foothold onto the fediverse, much as mastodon.social has been for many much more recent entrants.

Going to style the instance up all fancy, but plateia.org is up now! It's designed to be kind of the neutral instance/flagship thing/watering hole for postActiv - check it out! For those interested in continuing to follow my !postActiv development, I'll be posting dev things from the account there (@maiyannah@plateia.org) from hereon out (though it'll still be on the group unless I forget, or its daily rambling.) I'm going to divide the accounts into this one for HLA instance admin/gaming/personal stuff, and that one for postActiv development stuff, ostatus/federation talk/etc etc.
If you want to try out what postActiv has to offer, registrations will be open tomorrow (well, later today depending on timezones), after I've had a chance to spruce it up themewise and such. -

@lrshdl I've been hacking on my own postActiv for a while, Mastodon is the relative newcomer :) But I want to support the new instances. One of the big retention problems we've had in the past is that instances get set up on GNU social or postActiv or Mastodon, but the owners end up unable to financially support them when they grow big and they don't get that financial support, so they have to end up closed. We recently lost a couple big nodes to this :c So I am trying to prevent this from happening again!
(PS, I feel I would be remiss not to mention if people want to support postActiv, the patreon is at patreon.com/postActiv - even just a dollar helps :) ) -

I want to start my #buildingtheroads promotion of instances effort with one of the older instances in the network I am aware of that takes donations to support its efforts, quitter.no
It describes itself as follows:
"This is the place for you who are tired of private companies controlling your conversations and contacts and selling them for profit. On Quitter.no you are not locked up in a single commercial service; [...]
Quitter.no is not a service, because we're not selling commodities. Instead we call it an online commons. The site is run by the small Norwegian non-profit organisation kollektivet0x242.no which is solely funded by donations. All work is voluntary. @rysiek @stefanieschulte I'm not a huge anti-capitalist like some people but I have to say I resent this sort of trying to capitalise on communal activities like this. And the people who wish to cash in on these things tend to be very exploitative. -

@dredmorbius @eileenb Really, an admin that deserves some attention and praise is Hannes of quitter.se. He's been steering that ship for a long time now, many years, and always kept things steady. He's also weathered several twitter migrations to quitter itself with grave. -

I've had a good handful people asking me if I can help them set up a !postActiv instance and keep it going, and I've actually been reluctant to do this, for the reason that the sysadmin time for those instances would take away from my development time for postActiv (and my "day job" with HLA writing).
What StatusNet used to do is offered paid support of a kind, so I've embraced the spirit of my predecessor: those interested in having this done for them can find two new reward levels on the Patreon page: one for me to install it on a supported server you provide, and another for me to provide a VPS with it installed for you. I'm not sure if there'll be interest for it as a paid thing, but I figure that's the fairest thing if you want me to actually do it for you. Of course, if you set it up yourself but run into problems, myself or others can still lend a hand if you ping the usergroup :) #postActiv -

@mike Discovered Twitter, poked around there a bit on a psedonym, eventually set up an account there to promote my games writing stuff. Posted around for a bit, fell semi afoul of censorous administration, and heard that GNU social was a thing. I'd been on identi.ca before, but I didn't really realize that it was part of a federated network at a time and in retrospect I hear a lot of people say that. But in any event GNU social was kind of a watershed moment for me in a way (am I using that term correctly?) in that I found some passion for programming again with it. I got burnt pretty hard with some project drama in the past and said sod it, but the whole idea of the Fediverse captivated me. And here I am a year later with my own fork of GNU social and a head full of ideas. I hope I can implement even half of them. -

A lot of people give Hannes shit for the problems Qvitter has but I for one appreciate the effort that went into making it and he has definitely paid a lot of care and attention to it, it shows in the code. -
