I fairly recently migrated the entire family to Protonmail in order to get away from Google.

But just as I was getting everything running smoothly, now Protonmail is taking a plunge down the enshittification rabbithole. First it was ai garbage, and now it's bitcoin. As @davidgerard said in his recent blog post, they do email wrll. How about continuing to do so?

As I'm getting older I'm having less and less patience for this garbage. Despite having pre-paid for the family plan for 2 years, I will not stay on a service that has decided to commit to enhittifying their product line. What should I switch to? At this point, cost isn't really a problem.

Message to banks: If you use the word "wealth" in your marketing, I am very unlikely to want to be your customer.

I'm pretty middle-class, but apparently not the target for their marketing.

@codewiz @colin_brosseau @patrick I wish there was a keyboard with more keys available to buy. I really just want more keys to the left of the regular part of the keyboard, as well as more bucky bits.

Why do no one make these?

@patrick @codewiz I mean, xemacs is no longer developed, so I would be surprised if it had advocates.

@codewiz This is the time where someone (not me, obviously. I use it, but would never try to convince others to do it) replies with Emacs. They would explain how much more efficient it is once you get used to it.

@antijingoist @fribbledom @zens Perhaps there should be a terminfo field that indicates that accessible options are preferred. Then anyone wanting that could set TERM to this special terminal and programs such as gum could adjust its settings to make it easier to use with a braille terminal for example.

@AutumnMeowMeow @antijingoist @fribbledom @zens that could be an alternative indeed. If you you want to go that route, then one could define an entire extension protocol that allows a terminal to render things in an accessible manner.

But how does da1 work? I don't see it defined in terminfo, so you're suggesting hardcoding an extension to xterm?

Is there a self-hosted open source web-based application that is similar to MS Access?

If I want to create a small database of information that multiple people can update and/or search, what options are there?

I could build something from scratch of course, but I would like to avoid that.

@thomasfuchs sure there is. What if I want to have my biases confirmed, and actually want to keep my opinions in the face of evidence to the contrary? I can't go to science so I need something different, and that's the other side.

So I was reading a discussion somewhere (perhaps here) where someone was explaining that "web 2.0" was the "social web". Then it struck me that a lot of people don't even remember when this term was introduced, so to them this sounds like a very likely explanation.

The Web 2.0 term was introduced to differentiate the old page based browsing where everything was links and form submissions, to the dynamic web pages based on XMLHTTPRequest, allowing developers to write actual applications on the web. This is referred to as SPA (single page application) these days.

Social media didn't have anything to do with it, and it existed before the introduction of web 2.0. Of course after SPA's became a thing, social media sites started doing it as well, but it wasn't dependent on it. Early social media sites definitely didn't have any SPA functionality.

Mastodon, why is it so hard to find the place to click if you want to expand a thread from a post which has nothing but a picture?

    Dear search engines,

If I type three words, let's say rca, 501 and emulator, and there are pages on the Internet that actually contains those three words, could you please, for the love of everything that you hold dear, show them to me?

And no, the Wikipedia page for the RCA 501 does not contain the word emulator, so why do you think that it belongs as the number one result?

And the second result, "15 best Android emulators for PC and Mac of 2020" does not contain the words rca nor 501.

There was a time when search engines actually searched for the terms you typed in. I'd like us to return to that.

Look what sowed up in my Youtube playlist.

A bit of background: Several years ago I pledged to a kickstarter by Jeri Ellsworth. It was successful but after a few years their company had to close. Amazingly, they managed to find resources to pay back all the money they got from the kickstarter.

But she didn't give up, and now they're restarted the project, and of course I pledged to it.

She's a great engineer, also check the other videos.

Every time I decide to try out Rust I have similar revelations. On one hand, everything looks like a joke. On the other, you have lots of people who claim they build real software with it. It looks very similar to JS, actually.

If anyone with Unix skills (and preferably some development skills as well, but not really a requirement) wants a job, my employer has some openings right here in Singapore. You don't need to live in Singapore to apply.

@martin Java 11 is a bit of a mess. Up until 8 they preserved Java backwards compatibility so that (almost) all code would run unchanged. Now, it's a different story, and a lot of complex software can't run anymore.

In particular, ABCL can't run on anything newer than 8, and probably will never be able to.
