Hey Fediverse! I need your help.

I met a very sweet old man named Tom. He used to work for IBM. He's probably 75 years old or so.

He has a floppy disk that allegedly contains documents his father wrote.

He wants me to try to copy it.

My floppy drive isn't reading it.

I want some suggestions on next steps on how to proceed. I recognize that the disk is probably shot, but I really want to give it the old college try.

@josh I only tried it in two machines.

The first is probably having issues with it's floppy drive that are more general than this guys disk. I remembered that after we tried it and it didn't respond.

The second was a USB floppy drive on Ubuntu. The drive was recognized, the disk was not, but this might be USB FDD weirdness, so I don't want to rule out the disk yet.

I'm going to try some other disks in that drive today and see what that gets me.

When I say "A Better World is Possible" I mean that we must continue to believe and act as if a better world is possible, or it won't be.

It is possible, if we want it.

Their picks are a little stuffy for my tastes, but I'm glad such a thing exists.

It's frustrating when a 10 year old computer can't get on facebook or watch 480p on youtube anymore, even thought it could five years ago.

    The computer hasn't changed.

Facebook and youtube have become more complicated. They didn't need to, but they could get more complicated because the average computer got faster, and the average internet connection got faster over that time span.

So a computer that could do X lost it's ability to do X as a result of a third party.

    That's frustrating.

Hey! What's the single board computer that isn't a raspberry pi world look like right now?

I'm especially interested in low end/cheap stuff.

Does anything exist in the sub$10 range that is worth looking at? Ideally with on board storage?

I want to put together some set top boxes for playing media and games, as cheaply as possible. (I have two other related projects as well, I might talk about them in a few minutes, but something like a Chip is what I'm after.)

Someone earlier said Jeff Bezos makes more in a week than you could have earned at $5k/day since Columbus reached the US.

    I didn't believe it.

    I checked.

    It appears to be true.

    This is disgusting.

@The_BFOOL @ashley Looks like the Vortex86 which has about the same power draw as a low end 486 and is generally x4/5/686 compatible with performance in the high end 486 range, is still in production and available on a number of microcontrollers intended for industrial applications.

@hummingrain Work in progress draft: https://github.com/ajroach42/ajroach42.github.io/blob/master/_drafts/2019-07-23-diy-media-toolkit.md

I have a lot more to say, specifically about software, and about actually making media, and I need to add a bunch of links to the hardware section.

I'm also still working on the "why" section, but that's a start.

Probably though, we should back up and do some requirements gathering.

What do you need, what's your budget, what can't you compromise on?

I used to be good at fitting requirements to hardware. I could give it a shot again.

I don't know why, but this has been pretty heavy on my mind today.

So let's explore where I landed.

    1) I'm assuming that this kind of a scenario, if it was widely known, would lead to mass chaos.
    2) I'm not really interested in "how does the internet handle massive chaos", so I'm focusing on what activities I would undertake if I was one of a small group of people who knew this was coming.
    3) This is a springboard for a larger idea.

My feed is full of (legitimate) criticism of floss culture and communities, which is fine. I just need some entirely not tech stuff to balance it out.

Is there a fitness/activity tracker that doesn't exfiltrate my data to third parties?

I'd like to set some health and wellness goals for myself and track those automatically with sensors and software without being spied on.

Is there a product for me?
