Why do people refuse to use any version control? I mean, what the hell, this is 2019! We're not programming by banging two rocks together anymore. We moved on. We are smarter than this.

@signaleleven @turion I am not talking about changing licenses. Just of evaluating the software according to the criteria of the #FreeSoftwareDirectory.

Today a #FreeSoftwareDirectory meeting will take place to review the software freedom (or already assumed lack of, according to #RichardStallman / #RMS) of some works. Please contribute by either adding entries for review, by evaluating those, or to specific project teams. Every action has a javascript-free fallback. I have nothing against js myself, but accessibility is important.

The Intercept reports that Amazon Ring gave employees and its Ukrainian-based R&D team access to private cameras:
https://theintercept.com/2019/01/10/amazon-ring-security-camera/
This practice is wrong, but any system that makes this type of thing possible is broken by design.
You can imagine that I love the fact that one of my neighbors down the street at my child's bus stop has one of these devices.

Folks, there's just 5 days left for @conservancy to meet their 2018 year-end match! I'm one of those matchers and I'd love to ask you to please consider becoming an individual member 💖
I think Conservancy is one of the coolest and most important non-profits out there in the free software space. They interviewed me about it on their blog! https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2018/dec/27/elanahashman/

@shamar @adfeno Ironically, the ezine link you posted greets me with:
"It appears that you are using Tor anonymizing software
No Problem! We just need you to enter a Captcha so we can confirm that you are a person and not a bot."
Which is non-functional for me, presumably because I'm not running JS. I just loaded via the Internet Archive.
Some sites use CAPTCHAs even for read-only pages, presumably to try to thwart scraping, DOS attacks, and the like. (I fundamentally disagree with this practice.)
There are many other JS practices that need to change as well, both for security and user freedom. I highlighted what I perceive as many of the major issues a few years ago at LibrePlanet:
https://media.libreplanet.org/u/libreplanet/collection/restore-online-freedom/
In particular, I'm really hoping that someone will take up the issue of code signing and the ability to replace specific scripts with user-defined scripts (the latter may be best implemented in LibreJs considering the level of granularity it offers in script detection). -

@aral and all, I did some legal/law study on the status of Software Freedom Conservancy and found out that luckly it's a 501(c)(3) charity organization, highly regulated in the USA and that which must act for the public good. From the documents in their website and also on the conference one tells me that they are fine and upstanding in their charge to act in the public good. Nothing here convinces me otherwise. See https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2018/oct/10/microsoft-oin-exfat/ , https://sfconservancy.org/about/filings/ , https://2019.copyleftconf.org/sponsors/become-a-sponsor .

@alimiracle Perhaps here and also share the publication in mailing lists, IRC channels such as #libreplanet and #fsf on chat.freenode.net and also some general free software philosophy discussion places like #Trisquel's freedom-misc mailing list/forum and #Hyperbola's philosophy subforum.

Does anyone know of a data visualization tool into which I could enter a dataset about a piece of government spending, and have it visualized as a flow chart showing what the entity that received the bulk funding did with. Who received funds from the entity that received it from the government? Who did they pay it out to, and so on. Ideally in a way that an investigative journalist could add to the dataset over time, as they research something.

@njoseph Unfortunately #OprnSource misses the point as it doesn't care to educate people on the same issues as #FreeSoftware does. Besides, the Open Source Definition, kept by Open Source Initiative, doesn't address #DigitalHandcuffs such as #DRM or the more elaborated forms such as those in many phones that deny the user the freedoms 0 and 1 (to adapt and reuse that in the same unit).

Some of the foundations not only take Google's money, but also let Google dictate what to do. GNOME has this rule for the Board of Directors:
"Keep confidential discussions private. This includes legal discussions or conversations with the Advisory Board." Google is in the "Advisory" Board. -

@TheEnbyperor @sophia I do agree that some GNU projects are composed by butches, but I participate in some others that are not that way. Particularly I go to #Trisquel English support forum (trisquel-users mailing list) and general free software philosophy talk (freedom-misc), and also participate on #FSF and #UNESCO's Free Software Directory and meetings (both the website and meeting hours can be seen at https://directory.fsf.org/ ).
