Mastodon and PeerTube have some nice explainer videos and artwork. It would be nice to have such explainers for the idea of self-hosting in general.

As I expected, politicians are already trying to cynically exploit the Christchurch mosque shootings to give NZ spy agencies even more intrusive powers, further eroding the civil rights of 100% of kiwis who didn't shoot up a mosque:
"Already, the National Party is calling for it. Leader Simon Bridges told Morning Report that the agencies were operating with both hands tied behind their backs."

@tcit Yay! No non-free #JavaScript / #JS, and no blank image nor canvas tracking.
J'apprends au détour d'un tweet que l'attribut ping sur les liens existe en HTML5 et que ça sert à faire du tracking à peu de frais.

"With no possibility of migrating to IPv6 in time to solve the address space crunch, the industry resigned itself to soldiering on with IPv4, adopting the following increasingly clever means of conserving the limited address space. Each of these, however, had the unintended consequence of transforming the pure peer relationship originally envisioned for the Internet into “publisher” and “consumer” classes, and increasing the anonymity of Internet access."
- John Walker
@bob according to John Walker, the centralization of the web started around 1995, with the failure to adopt IPv6. Although the term "web 2.0" wasn't coined until later, sites that fit that description started to appear in the late 90s (including the first #Indymedia site in 1999)

Brucesploitation is a real film genre!
"Brucesploitation is a sub-genre of martial arts films which cropped up after Bruce Lee's untimely death, designed to take advantage of Bruce's overseas popularity, often featuring actors with similar physical features and stage names."
