Update: 49,215 new users across different Mastodon servers since yesterday. Probably a lot of them are actually from yesterday. My crawler only runs once a day so I get a bit of a delayed view of things.

I got asked out on a video interview for a TV channel today and dressed up really nicely, but I don't think the footage was used in the end. 🥲

I got asked this by a few different journalists today, so I'm just going to share the numbers. 10,801 people signed up on different Mastodon servers today, and 22,139 since last week.

Uploads may appear to not be working on mastodon.social as of right now because the processing queue is delayed by 12 minutes. The file does get uploaded but the processing happens only 12 minutes later. The delay is caused by the workload of restoring home feeds of people who've come back after a long absence.

Today is answering press inquiries, helping old users get back into their accounts, and trying to make sure our infrastructure keeps up with the load.

I am feeling a pickup in people returning to their accounts (and asking for help with login).

There are 250 commits that need to be turned into a human-readable changelog for 4.0

The next release of #Mastodon will be numbered 4.0 and the release candidate will be available soon.

When a traditional social media site shuts down (G+, app.net) your entire social graph is scattered to the wind - to other proprietary systems that don't interoperate. When a Mastodon server shuts down, you just import your follows list into a new account.

I don't understand why people seem to expect that if they sign up here they must get famous instantly or it's a failure of the platform. Did you not spend years growing your network on Twitter?

@ToadKing DeepL. The translation feature only shows up for public posts. Other backends are available for other admins, e.g. LibreTranslate.

I've updated mastodon.social and mastodon.online to the latest code in the main branch. You can follow hashtags, translate posts, and the UI is the same for logged in and logged out users (though keep in mind the logged out version is not entirely complete).
