Decentralization isn't everything. It's not the goal in itself. There is a long tail of product design decisions that make or break a platform (which is why I find it kind of silly that Bluesky spent 2 years arguing over protocol design, though that's a different story). But that point is that decentralization is the foundation for a viable platform. Without it you're doomed to repeat the path of hundreds of social media apps of the past... Just a different paint on the same exact structure.

I remember, years back now, coming across someone arguing with fervor that proprietary software was better than open source software because it was more secure. It was a culture shock to me, because usually I am surrounded by people for whom the benefits of open-source software are self-evident. I got the same feeling today arguing with some folks who genuinely believe that being locked into a proprietary, centralized silo is actually better than having control over your own platform...

Explaining Mastodon in a conversation is so much easier than doing it through text on a website. That has never gotten easier. In fact it's gotten harder because now you have to worry about not sounding like a cryptocurrency because the concept of "decentralization" has been co-opted...

Disappointed to learn Cohost has been started by people from the fediverse. You know what the fediverse is but you learned the wrong lessons from it. Yes, I also think some servers are not operated professionally and blocks often get misused, but that is not a reason to replace a free and open system with a locked down one. Doctor Strange literally swallowing a galaxy destroying attack from Ultron like a snack is the best Doctor Strange moment across all of his appearances so far. I want to see that version of Strange again.

I didn’t think Multiverse of Madness was very good. I’m unfortunately disappointed in the direction Marvel seems to be taking in regards to gratuitous violence. There was one scene that I thought was very cool, but frankly, What If had a much better Doctor Strange story than this movie.

The scene I really liked was Zombie Strange. It was perfectly setup with a Chekhov’s Corpse.

I am reading the #Bluesky #ADX architecture outline. First impression is that it seems quite complicated. The topology looks a lot like the fediverse but everything is a Merkle tree and identity is tied to something that looks a lot like a blockchain.

Mastodon has a verification mechanism, though it looks different from Twitter's. We do not ask for your documents. Instead, if you have a website that you are known by, you can verify that you are the owner of that website.

Link to your Mastodon profile from the website, either through a visible link, or through a <link> tag in the head of the document, with a rel=me attribute, and link back to that page from your Mastodon profile. It should then get a green checkmark, like @Mastodon.

I was asked to do a video interview, but in the end they couldn't send a crew to where I live. I know the interview would be good for Mastodon, but I am so relieved I don't have to do it 😅

The reason they wanted to shoot a video interview was because they really liked the other interview I did with them that will go out as text. So do not worry, I was not ghosted.
