No big reason, just many different small reasons that have accumulated over the past few months.
For example, one concern is if an alternative goes bad, the book is still out there on people's ereaders continuing to recommend it.

I've heard many good things about @disroot and they're recommended on switching.social π
@fosstodon @switchingsocial are there and Android alternatives for tablet. I am looking to root my kindle tablet.
Boost appreciated.

The critera are that the alternative has to be as private/ethical as possible while still being easy to use for a non-technical person.
I asked the Fediverse their opinions of Telegram and it brought up some significant problems:

Nazis hate bans because bans work.
Bans on Gab-style sites contain extremists to isolated enclaves where they have a much harder time recruiting new members. The enclaves remain small, obscure, irrelevant.
Bans make life harder for Nazi movements, bans shrink them and weaken them.
By contrast, public debates make life easier for Nazis, their profile is raised, their reputation legitimised and their membership grows.
My #FF today goes for an open source project that I like very much:
π #Funkwhale ~ @funkwhale - a social platform to enjoy and share music while being federated, if you want to! :blobaww:
You can read more about it at https://funkwhale.audio/ if you don't know what it is.
And even though it's still in development you can also already join an open pod and start using it!
π³ Here's a couple of them:

Nazis' ultimate aim is to shift the overton window so far towards their viewpoint that ordinary people start to find their tactics acceptable.
And when it gets to that point, it will be far too late to stop them. They will not submit to debate, they will simply lock up their opponents or worse.
Indeed, locking up political opponents is already starting to creep back into mainstream political rhetoric π
@pinkprius @doliu666 @inditoot @Gargron
The only time Nazis are vulnerable to rational debate is when they overstep the mark so blatantly that their own supporters begin to have doubts.
That's why Nazis nowdays go as far as they can without overstepping the mark, each time trying to push the "overton window" a little further in their direction, each time pushing further until someone stops them.
That's why it is so important to stop them.
@pinkprius @doliu666 @inditoot @Gargron
The Nazis' central message is this:
"Whatever problems you have, it's the fault of (fill in scapegoat here)."
"The (scapegoat) has taken over your country, taken away your jobs and threatens your family. (Scapegoat) needs to be expelled/destroyed. We will destroy it."
This isn't something that can be debated rationally, because none of it is based on reason. It's an emotional argument that defies rational discourse.
@pinkprius @doliu666 @inditoot @Gargron
Exactly.
It was prosecutions (most notably at Nuremberg), shame and lack of publicity that kept the Nazis pretty much non-existent for most of Europe's post-war history.
Nazism is not a rational argument, it's a racist disease. It has no basis in reason or science, just emotion and anger. Unfortunately, many people are more likely to be influenced by emotional arguments than rational ones.
Mastodon is so full of nice little touches that no one sees π
#MastoTips is a good hashtag for posts about this topic.

I understand the theory, and I would agree with you if better ideas won. But they don't, not on the internet.
Nazi concepts used to be pretty much invisible in widely seen media: no tv, no radio, no newspapers etc. During this time, they got no votes at all in elections.
Then the internet came along, and with it the ability to spread fake racist material of the most vile kind.
This isn't a debate of ideas, it is a firehose of propaganda.
So, if someone was promoting physical harm, it would be ok to censor that?
Have you ever been in a discussion thread on Mastodon where you don't want to take part any more, but people keep mentioning you?
There's a really easy way to opt out of one particular discussion:
1. Click on "..." in one of the thread's posts that mentions you
2. Select "Mute conversation"
So, if I could demonstrate harm caused by certain speech, it would be ok to censor it?
By the way, a lot of posts on Twitter etc are bots too. It is surprisingly difficult to tell the difference between spam and manual posts nowadays π

Is that a threat?
