So I'm thinking about finally signing up on Patreon to help financially some projects. I have been delaying this because, well, afaik Patreon is a centralized and non-free service, but since no alternatives are getting traction among most of these projects, this waiting for a remedy might be worse than the sickness.

I told myself to be a bit more consequentialist and less deontologist this year and see what happens. Your thoughts?

@tagomago I researched Patreon quite a bit before I joined up. And before that a service called Subbable.

So far, the company has been reasonably transparent about it's workings. It supports many of the international locations that are hard to get access to (and probably took a lot of work for their legal team) and they issue tax documents for you to help file your taxes at the end of the year.

For a creator, their system is less work than say LiberaPay (also good) but their website is basic.

@doctormo Thanks!! I remember I read their TOS and privacy policy, the former was "ok" I believe, but the latter seemed a bit hellish, even more given it's US-based. Anyway...

@tagomago I support some of the causes I think are good through Patreon. I appreciate that it is not ideal, but I figure the causes need my $$ more than my ideals.

@tagomago So I guess you are considering adopting the philosophy of "the end justifies the means." I wonder if it is possible for both the action and consequence to be morally right. I do feel that process is often as important as outcome because it too can lead to transformative change.

Anyway, it is not that difficult for causes and projects to accept donations in a different way. Most would be happy to if they saw benefit. I recently signed up for Open Collective https://opencollective.com

@imgn >So I guess you are considering adopting the philosophy of "the end justifies the means."

Not fully. Just in some cases, where digging in my heels in the deontologist stance only acts as a method to clean my conscience or, worse, be comfortable. I want to try other strategies, see what happens.

      >I wonder if it is possible for both the action and consequence to be morally right.

It can be, many times. Depending on your morals, that is.

How is OC different from Patreon?

@tagomago I haven't used Patreon, so I am probably not the best person to ask. But I like the free and flexible tools that Open Collective provides for project owners. Liberapay seems good too, but it is still pretty limited.
