Finished a 9 episode docu-series "History of Russian Computer Games". It was alright. Tons of inaccuracies & omissions. Last couple of episodes are embarrassing because the doc is state sponsored & pushes a current Rusian agenda. But it was nice to see some of the 80s & 90s devs & hear them talk. Also a pretty big public admission by the founder of Akella in regards to also owning a legendary 90s pirate publishing label.
@mcc@jplebreton I mean, I didn't really want to make YT videos, but at the time there didn't seem to be anything else to reach a non-targeted audience. So I started a YT channel. It really wasn't until, forgive me lord, Twitter that I actually found a form that fit what I wanted to express better, and actually got some recognition. But as Dan points out, yes, AVGN was inspirational to many just because he had a leg up in video production in the early days of streaming video.
@jplebreton@mcc Interesting. I was there at the beginning of the AVGN, and enjoyed the early works quite a lot. In fact, AVGN inspired me to start my own YT channel. I was, however, always surprised by a slew of direct imitators of the style because I always realized that it was a character James was playing, and that it was a sketch show first, and everything else second.
@ashortbusvet What I was mainly pointing out that on June 22nd of 1996, the officially celebrated date of Quake's release, there was no way to actually play the full version of the game because it didn't exist yet.
@ashortbusvet I mean, another way was for wait for the shareware CD to appear in the stores (I think in August?,) buy it for $10, and then just download a copy of QCrack (available 10/08/96,) and you were all set.
Huh. Well, I just had an anxiety attack while relaxing, sitting in my chair, reading some 30+ year old programming documentation. What the hell? Not cool.
Happy birthday to the Internet SHAREWARE version of Quake! 🎂🎉🍾🥂 Remember, it was only 8 maps long. To get the full game you had to order it for $45 + $5 S&H (about $100 today) and wait for it to get finished and shipped to you.
