Finished a 9 episode docu-series "History of Russian Computer Games". It was alright. Tons of inaccuracies & omissions. Last couple of episodes are embarrassing because the doc is state sponsored & pushes a current Rusian agenda. But it was nice to see some of the 80s & 90s devs & hear them talk. Also a pretty big public admission by the founder of Akella in regards to also owning a legendary 90s pirate publishing label.

@mcc @jplebreton I mean, I didn't really want to make YT videos, but at the time there didn't seem to be anything else to reach a non-targeted audience. So I started a YT channel. It really wasn't until, forgive me lord, Twitter that I actually found a form that fit what I wanted to express better, and actually got some recognition. But as Dan points out, yes, AVGN was inspirational to many just because he had a leg up in video production in the early days of streaming video.

@jplebreton @mcc Interesting. I was there at the beginning of the AVGN, and enjoyed the early works quite a lot. In fact, AVGN inspired me to start my own YT channel. I was, however, always surprised by a slew of direct imitators of the style because I always realized that it was a character James was playing, and that it was a sketch show first, and everything else second.

Umbrella Entertainment is putting out a collector's set with FIVE versions of Caligula (1979), and god, I wish I had money to throw around on shit like this 😅

    2. ABSOLUTE POWER - Caligula: The Ultimate Cut (2023) Collector's Edition (4K +2 Blu-Rays +2 Books +Magazine +Rigid case +Slipcase +2Posters +Artcards)
Released in 1980 after years of delay, CALIGULA remains notoriously famous for its nightmarish filming, budget-blowing delays and artistic differences, resulting in a hybridised yet still scandalously violent and erotic film. More than forty years later, you can now watch the painstakingly restored cut with previously unreleased scenes. CALIGULA delves into the debauched reign of the Roman emperor Gaius Caligula, infamous for his tyranny and extravagance. Produced by Bob Guccione of Penthouse Magazine, the film offers a lurid depiction of Caligula's descent into madness, exploring – through historical drama and explicit erotica - his incestuous relationships, sadistic tendencies, and megalomaniacal desires for power.

@ashortbusvet What I was mainly pointing out that on June 22nd of 1996, the officially celebrated date of Quake's release, there was no way to actually play the full version of the game because it didn't exist yet.

@ashortbusvet I mean, another way was for wait for the shareware CD to appear in the stores (I think in August?,) buy it for $10, and then just download a copy of QCrack (available 10/08/96,) and you were all set.

@a1ba That is a normal shareware thing. Although Quake's 4th episode is my favorite.

Huh. Well, I just had an anxiety attack while relaxing, sitting in my chair, reading some 30+ year old programming documentation. What the hell? Not cool.

Happy birthday to the Internet SHAREWARE version of Quake! 🎂🎉🍾🥂
Remember, it was only 8 maps long. To get the full game you had to order it for $45 + $5 S&H (about $100 today) and wait for it to get finished and shipped to you.

@marshray Well, the most obvious would be Microsoft's own stuff that was bundled with DOS. Like HIMEM.SYS.

@robdaemon I feel like it's cool that supplies an X library to it use with a DOS compiler. But it's definitely targeting a very specific kind of user.
