That's a bit extreme, saying that schools are either named or imaginary?

I'm willing to take this on trust:

The problem was this:

-Some schools liked the software but didn't want to use an app with that name.

-GIMP's lead developers absolutely refused to change the name.

The only way to get GIMP to these schools in this situation is to fork it with a name change.

Getting this kind of software more widely used in schools is great, because it means more future professionals will be comfortable using FLOSS software instead of being captives of Adobe etc.

They're not forcing people to use the fork, they even encourage people to donate money to GIMP directly.

They're just providing the fork for people who cannot use GIMP (such as the educators mentioned in the Register article).

Giving people a choice isn't setting anyone back, it's widening the audience for an excellent app.

Google's captcha tracks people too. Google's entire business model depends on tracking people, that's why they give away so many "free" services.
