If you're using Mastodon on a computer, did you know you can drag and drop files to attach them?
Start writing the toot, then drag a file into the box to attach it.

I know it is slightly tongue in cheek, but an educational app that used the pokemon format combined with photo recognition of different animals/plants could help with teaching about wildlife.
It might even make people appreciate the need for biodiversity, if they have memories of trying to "catch" as many different species as possible.

Are you a German speaker?
You should check out SwitchingSocial.de, a German language fork of switching.social.
The website is here:
You can follow it at:
It's owned and run by the translators, so contact them directly if you have suggestions for the site.
That sounds more like a mute than a block.
Mastodon has both mute and block options.
If that's the case, then it sounds like Mastodon is doing the right thing, while those non-Masto instances are doing the wrong thing.
So the Mastodon user guide is incorrect?
This is not about privacy, the post is public.
This is about blocked users not being able to add replies to a post.
Yeah, but then when they log in, the post should not longer be visible to them if they are blocked, so there will be nothing to reply to from that account.
Onboarding would be a site aimed at non-technical people.
According to the Mastodon user guide:
"(Blocking) will stop (blocked users) from seeing your public toots while they are logged in"
How can a blocked user reply to a post that they cannot see while logged in?
Announcing ActivityPub Conf 2019! September 7th & 8th in Prague, immediately following Rebooting Web of Trust. https://dustycloud.org/blog/activitypub-conf-2019/
Space is limited, see post for details. We are also soliciting talks.
Hope to see you there!
Yes, I encourage any forks to follow what they see as correct and not worry about syncing, partly because it is good to have independence/diversity but also because different languages will have different available resources.
For example, Framasoft provides many French-only sites that I can't link to because I run an English language site. But the French fork could link to them all.
My understanding is that a Mastodon instance shouldn't accept a reply to my messages from someone I've blocked.
They'll be able to see a public post, but they shouldn't be able to attach a reply to it.
If you're looking for an alternative to #PokemonGo, no need to ask @switchingsocial - I have the perfect tip for you.
It is harder, more complex, more fun, doesn't track you and you can play it on any device that has a camera: It's called #WildLifePhotography.
Or if you don't have any such device try WildLifeDrawing instead, which the former is a fork of.

1. Social media users have to be able to block others from interacting with them online, otherwise the internet would turn into a nasty "might is right" wild west.
2. Many abusers know exactly what effect their abuse has, but they enjoy it or find it somehow useful to their cause. Education doesn't help in those cases, because the abusers simply don't care, there's no good intent there.
I can't speak for @swisode as it's their site and they decide what goes in there, but I don't list Pleroma because it lacks onboarding for non-tech people.
Also, it seems Pleroma allows instance owners to bypass blocks very easily, which is rather worrying.

Germany has banned its #schools from using cloud-based productivity suites from Microsoft, Google, and Apple, because the companies weren't meeting the country's #privacy requirements.

Ok, gotcha. I've reported this to my instance admin.
Just to make clear, this isn't so much a privacy/visibility issue. My public posts are visible from outside the Fediverse anyway.
I *do* mind blocked people being able to add their repiles to my posts, because other people can see them and the potential for abuse is huge.
