I would say Skype is a better comparison. Jami is mainly centred around voice and video calls, and has a Skype-stye interface.

Jami is how Skype used to be before Microsoft took it over.

Well, some people would say using .io is condoning the expulsion of the Chagossians.

I don't think most .io sites are aware of this issue though.

Apparently .io belongs to Diego Garcia, an island in the Indian Ocean which is currently owned by the UK and leased to a US airbase.

The UK threw the Chagossian natives off the island in the 1960s, most of them are currently living in the UK.

The Chagossians have been fighting a long legal battle through the English courts to return to Diego Garcia. The case has had lots of twists and turns:

I think this is something you would have to discuss with website owners directly, because there's presumably very little awareness of this issue.

I'm guessing most people simply aren't aware where the .io domain comes from, especially nowadays when generic non-country domains like .data or .xyz dominate the lists of available names.

(How many people know .tv is from Tuvalu?)
