Mario Vavti Besides some visual improvements and the usual amount of bug fixes, most work for Hubzilla 8.4 was done under the hood. Performance has been improved and memory consumption reduced. Directory sync has been rewritten from scratch. A possibility to flag directory entries unsafe or spam for directory admins has been added. Directory flags are being synced between trusted directories. Trusted directories are considered the ones listed in get_directory_fallback_servers(). Additional trusted directory servers can be added manually if your hub is configured to serve as directory. The channelreputation addon has been moved to addons-unmaintained. The way it has been storing its data has led to serious issues on hubs with many channels and nobody is maintaining it at the moment. For more info about the changes in Hubzilla 8.4 please refer to the changelog.

Mario Vavti Native dark/light mode is probably the most visible new addition in Hubzilla 8.2. The modes can be switched on the fly via the moon and sun buttons in the hamburger menu. They also made the light and dark schemas redundant. Another nice usability improvement is the contact filter in the HQ widget. Just simply start typing the name or address of a contact and select it from the dropdown to get a list of top level posts by this contact only. Last but not least there is the addition of multi-factor authentication in core which we have ported from streams. It uses TOTP and can be setup in your account settings.
Other notable changes - A fancy new project website created withhubzilla webpages at https://hubzilla.org - Page load progress indicator for PWA standalone mode - Improved contact search - Author images in HQ widget - Theme improvements - Many bugfixes
Breaking changes - PHP 8.1 is now the minimum supported version - If you used multifactor auth via the TOTP addon you will need to set it up again in your account settings - You might need to revisit your custom theme settings due to native dark/light mode changes
For a detailed list of changes please refer to the changelog.

Update- Backup your data - Make sure you use at least PHP 8.1 - Add App::$config['system']['db_skip_locked_supported'] = 1; to .htconfig.php if you use postgresql > 9.5, mysql > 8.0, mariadb > 10.6 or any other DB backend that supports skip locked - Execute util/udall

1. OCAP access Grant limited posts the right to access linked private media via OCAP tokens. This solves the issue where private media was not accessible by platforms which do not implement OpenWebAuth.
2. Accept unsolicited comments for moderation Unsolicited comments and reactions can arrive from platforms which do not implement comment permissions. Until now those were silently dropped. With this option enabled you will have the possibility to decide if you want to approve or delete such comments.
Those options are available in the channel privacy settings and are off by default. For more info about the changes in Hubzilla 8.6 please refer to the changelog.

Addons: - The Faces addon (requires python 3 and the python deepface library) will provide the Faces App which will detect faces in your photos and let you tag them. More info about this addon is available from its readme file. - The Logger Stats addon provides a tool for admins and developers to display various hub activities in a graphical way. It requires logging to be enabled to collect the data.
UI: - The content of the right aside area is now moved to the left aside on small screens. - Seen public stream items are now removed from the new public stream notifications area.
Under the hood: - We now use a new language detect library which supports 110 languages and should improve detection of rtl languages. Posts in rtl languages should now be displayed rtl. This library requires the PHP mbstring extension. - The gallery addon has been updated to use photoswipe version 5. - Performance improvements and bug fixes.

Besides the usual amount of bugfixes Hubzilla 8.6 comes with a solution for two issues with interoperability between Hubzilla and other federated networks which do not support OpenWebAuth or comment permissions.

2. Accept unsolicited comments for moderation Unsolicited comments and reactions can arrive from platforms which do not implement comment permissions. Until now those were silently dropped. The “Federated timeline” (or similar) is where posts from other instances (or servers) are shown. It is not the entire Fediverse, rather, it displays posts from instances your server have already encountered.
In Mastodon, you can remove that panel. In other platforms, it's a separate tab. It's all up to you if you want to read it.
@mkljczk So I don't understand why this share should go only to Mastodon and not to #Fediverse. Why should Mastdon be the only platform which should be supported? Of course Mastodon is only one of the possible implementations - besides #Pleroma, #Misskey, #Friendica, #Hubzilla where the common communication system is #ActivityPub - so why not support this protocol? @GIMP
There are a bunch of other social apps, but to be honest #Mastodon for me seems to be the most polished & has the most users (so it's the most social).
If you can think of a good reason to check out the others please let me know why 🙂
Some aren't just microblogging, but do other things too.
Hubzilla 6.2 has been released after two months of development. The most noticeable change in this release is probably the work that has been done on the apps infrastructure. Featured (starred) and pinned apps in the app-bin and navigation bar can now easily be sorted via drag and drop. Additionally apps can now be moved to the navigation bar or app-bin by dragging the app icon from the installed apps overview to either the right side of the navigation bar (pin action) or directly onto the hamburger menu (star action). The overviews of the available and installed apps have been restructured and app descriptions implemented. For your convenience apps can now also be installed directly from the module that provides the app.
Other mentionable changes include: - The custom highlight bbcode [hl] has been deprecated in favor of [mark] which is a HTML5 standard. - The post_mail permission has been implemented to allow/deny direct messages from contacts - The actor store and cache mechanism has been refactored - Hubzilla now supports installation as a PWA (Progressive Web App) if this is supported by the browser - Translation updates - Bug fixes
Breaking changes: - Hubzilla has been updated to Bootstrap 5. If you use a custom theme, please make sure to update the templates accordingly. See here for reference: #^https://getbootstrap.com/docs/5.0/migration - The channel menu option for visitors has been removed in favor of an extended app-bin

There are four different protocols the #ActivitiPub, #Diaspora and #OStatus and there is also the #DFRN protocol which is as good as dead.
Mastodon is the number 1 network with over 4.000.000 users followed by Diaspora with over 600.000 members. On place 3 comes #Pleroma with over 30.000 members followed by #Hubzilla on place 4 with over 10.000 members and on place 5 comes #Friendica with almost 4.000 members.
According to this calculation it would be clear that #Mastodon is the clear winner but here the idea of the #Federation (Association) takes hold. Let's see who can communicate with whom and what the result is, start with the winner.
Mastodon can communicate with Pleroma, Hubzilla and Friendica so that results in 4.044.00 users.
Diaspora can communicate with Hubzilla and Friendica, resulting in a total of 614,000 users.
Pleroma can communicate with Mastodon, Hubzilla and Friendica and has a comparable reach to Mastodon of 4,044,000 members.
Hubzilla can communicate with Friendica and Pleroma, resulting in a reach of 44,000 members.
Friendica can communicate with Mastodon, Diaspora, Pleroma, and Hubzilla, resulting in a reach of 4,644,000 people.
Friendica is the clear winner in terms of reach. Now everyone just has to find out for themselves which platform suits them best.
