@aral the words you are looking for to describe specific decentralized architectures are:

- peer-to-peer
- federated <--- this is ActivityPub

the difference between a federated and p2p network is the relation that users have to peers. federated systems *are* p2p in a sense, but the "peers" in the network are also intended to serve clients.

a true p2p system like #ssb or #ipfs has a ~1:1 mapping between clients and users. all clients have the same capabilities.

#🅱fs is like this thing: a graph database of tags and hashes that point to objects in #ipfs you sync this graph between every device in your mesh, right? this graph is also used to keep track of which host has a copy of which hashes and ensure that there is at least n pinned copies of each hash in your mesh

granted, this may not apply to popular hashes, so maybe it'll take that into account

@bob they go on about how #ipfs is NOT a file sharing tool and that Protocol Labs respects "intellectual property" and that #ipfs is DEFINITELY NOT #BitTorrent

mostly, they are trying to distance themselves from the pirate brand that bittorrent has attached to it

@bob #IPFS the tech is pretty good, and i really like the engineering perspective of building tech that works across interplanetary distances. that bit of the first IPFS talk i saw was quite inspiring. what i don't appreciate so much is the stance Protocol Labs takes on "intellectual property", i understand their reasoning and i don't know that they could do it any other way if they want buy-in from tech companies and such.

@bob I was hoping to create an #ipfs competitor that was compatible with #BitTorrent and mainline #DHT, but I think it will be easier to use ipfs as the storage substrate in my mesh system and include a bit torrent app with #grid that way I can take advantage of the momentum they've built up, still have access to the very large BitTorrent content catalog like I wanted, and save myself a lot of effort.

i've given up on fighting #IPFS because i have more important fish to fry (DM for recipe)

but i'm still going to give it to Protocol Labs

this tech WILL be used to make "intellectual property" laws unenforceable. i WILL bring the #BitTorrent stigma to you tech fam

@h i know about #IPFS read the papers and everything, used it for some projects. still not impressed. gx is a hack imo.

i think the problem can be solved better with #BitTorrent (and carry along a nice catalog of liberated IP)
