@pan Well, you're reasonably private if you use Tor and only want to protect your original identity. So you have a perfect privacy setup for leaking sensitive information in a broadcast fashion to subscribers since (afaik) all !ostatus federating instances allow Tor connections.
But no, neither !GNUsocial nor #Mastodon have any real privacy for hiding content.
There's always that question about which tool to use for what purpose: What's your threat model? -

@frankiesaxx Any minute now you'll start OStatus subscribing to communists and anarchists and even extremists like !GNUsocial or even !qvitter developers. -

@lex_jay About that, @taknamay tried roleplaying on !GNUsocial some time ago. cc: @maloki -

@strypey For example !GNUsocial allows for remote deletion but there is no guarantee that anyone cares about the requests. Take older #StatusNet installations for example, they don't support the 'delete' verb. -

@mama21mama I heard you had problems with !GNUsocial and lighttpd. I run that combination myself on both this instance and for example #quitter.es without issues. -

@dredmorbius But at least you can use #tor against most instances afaik. !GNUsocial also works hard on avoiding third party servers, so no external javascript (also compatible without javascript at all) as well as locally stored media. Not even third party servers with a misleading domain name (i.e. Amazon S3 on a subdomain.service.example DNS). -

@schlink @kodo @masklayer @trev Also !GNUsocial sites tend to have public feeds available you can check stuff like https://quitter.es/main/all or https://quitter.se/main/all for interesting conversations. -

I'm inherently happy to see some faces in the !fediverse here that I otherwise could only have a read-only relation with. @rysiek is one, of course, but also of course @maloki who I remember tried out what would eventually become !GNUsocial a couple of years ago! -

@grimsdottir Mostly I think because there's been PR work done with writing articles for various popular tech sites. Also most of the stuff written is more of a "this is how awesome it is" rather than sluggishly walking along thinking "meh, we think it should do its job and we're not trying to take over the world".
Plus of course using all the hip languages and buzzwords, making the UI look fancypants while hiding the ugly underwear. There's been a tremendous amount of work done in a short time, making it look really neat and nice - while that of course also means that several things are overlooked and need to be worked on now that the rush has come. Hopefully the high won't go down before all the people have left .) -

@aral Yeah, feed as feed. They're all translatable into each other anyway given that they're Activity Streams (and !GNUsocial for example delivers both .as and .atom since there's a simple method to call for output-formatting a stream).
As you probably understood, my point was more regarding public availability without authorisation. .) -

@lambadalambda Yeah, @gargron instead pushes privacy by obscurity as the general direction. !GNUsocial just accepts that federation in a public, web space simply should be public. The easier it is to see how it works, the easier it is to understand how to be safe and secure. -

@b9ace Right, maybe we shouldn't count characters that make up URLs. I think Twitter stopped doing that, I'll see if it's a quick fix in !GNUsocial. -

@auerbach All you should have to trust the instance with is your identity. Given federation, you will have no control over your data. Post only things that are public, discuss only things that are socially constructive and move your private business to either a medium designed for privacy (XMPP) or make sure to use pseudonyms on alternate accounts to go about your less public business. Those are my two-fiddy. -

@gamehawk I'm not sure why one would have accounts on multiple OStatus instances at all, unless for debugging purposes as a developer. The whole point of the software and network is that sites are federated .)
(unless you're varying and disconnecting your different online personas, but then your username wouldn't be the same anyway) -

@moonman It is horrible, I agree. There's a reason I don't say I'm a !GNUsocial developer, but rather just a maintainer. I want nothing more than to see the codebase get rewritten from scratch in a sensible language.
Unfortunately, given the great body of work that the codebase is, rewriting and including all functionality that comes along with it takes a long, long time. #Mastodon's been at it for about a year now and still doesn't have, afaik: #FOAF, groups, various small helpful markup/header treats.
But they're getting there I guess. Unfortunately I'm allergic to Ruby. -

No, !GNUsocial does not modify the original file. Thumbnails get rotated though.
