This instance, https://federate.social was launched 6 months ago in response to a civic emergency: Twitter’s hostile acquisition. I’ve kept it small, safe, reliable, and manageable. Our members have fully funded my costs generously. The block list I carefully assembled has minimized moderation work and harm. The next 6 months will inform my thinking on whether to keep things small and simple or move toward building the membership scale that would justify the costs of formalization. #MastoAdmin

As the #birdsite implodes I can feel the #fedigrowth on my #StarterInstance getting pummeled. The question is not if I will need to upgrade to the next tier, but when. #FediAdmin

Currently running my federate.social instance under the $8 month threshold (incl. domain reg.) It's been so fun and really improves your experience. It only takes a few clicks to get it running after you secure a domain. The more folks setup these small instances, the more it takes the load off of the big servers.
