Let me go ahead and nail down the concerns we'd have from the start.
No, I won't have it run in the background silently with no way to control it.
No, I won't have it start up automatically, users will have to opt-in.
No, it won't be locked in to some high percentage of CPU use, you choose if and what percentage you want to dedicate to it.
Basically completely voluntary, as was our stance on donations in the first place. If you can, you can, great. If you can't, you can't and that's fine, too.
From here I hope to set up the site volunteers we have to get a cut of what goes in over costs, too. I think we'd be more inclined to putting work in for features and anything more than stagnation if we're seeing passive income from it.
Anyway, feel free to voice concerns and we'll talk it out below. Just wanted discussion before I went ahead and made any changes that directly effect users.

Your ideas and the range of acceptable to stupid shit you like are simply information, data, that can be countered with more data and more information. Being aware and open of information and weighing it can change your position or work in a way to strengthen it.
Shutting out people entirely on kneejerk decisions opens you up to be shut out entirely as well.
Saying people are complicit in physical, harmful acts because they are capable of reading, hearing and discussing ideas people use as an excuse to commit atrocities is as absurd as any "devil made me do it", "I'm a victim of the patriarchy" or "I cannot change my stars" superstitious hufflepuff.
This world is fascinating, and amazing in the way it's turned out through the instruments of mankind's creation.

@dolus @strypey I'm actually dealing with the same thing right now with a guy who pretended to be a girl since before GamerGate and through GamerGate that is now taking plays out of that playbook.
They claimed before to have cancer, surviving a random assault and now the claim that they're homeless and living in a hotel to try to get money out of people. All the while they have a paypal, a patreon and a gofundme running. Thing is the gofundme is of a "former boyfriend" and the person that claims to run the Twitter account isn't pictured at all. And each of the other money accounts are ran by other people so they don't have their name attached to it.
They use the same picture over and over, not date/time stamped and not even "username" stamped to the prove the person pictured is the person behind the account. And when they get people to give money they send nude pictures of themselves which don't resemble the first entity pictured.
So keeping track of this someone like strypey may call "stalking". That's super unfair because the reality is:
1. I'm making effort to keep people from being scammed
2. Some girl is being associated with this without her knowledge
3. Some OTHER girl's nudes are being tossed about without her knowledge
And aGG like strypey want me to sit back in fear of being called "a harasser" to not put a nail in this person's scam? To protect well meaning people AND actual women?
Nah, fuck that. All ahead stern. -

@dolus @strypey This has actually been proven, too, by analyzing the words and history of those that made accusations.
Zoe Quinn claimed to have "ran to Europe to escape GamerGate" in Fall 2014. The reality was the trip was planned well in advance, at least 3 months prior to the situation kicking off.
Brianna Wu claimed to have "been chased from their home" during GamerGate, but analyzing photos they had posted against video conferencing they were doing while they claimed to not be at their home revealed... they were lying.
Point is, it's a misnomer to call it "harassment" when you're accused of something and the only way to dig up proof to vindicate is to use the words of the scam artists themselves, since the media wasn't interested in casting a critical eye and a desire for actually getting to the bottom of any stories being told.
You know, the truth. -

We've got 36k registered accounts on sealion.club.
Are they all legit people? No, absolutely not. But it could safely be said that of Mastodon.social's 41k registered accounts /the vast majority/ are bot registered, one time lookers or name reservers as well.
People trying to play numbers games aren't going to get any useful information as to sustainability and interest, especially comparing organic growing and having to fight Twitter to pull them off their blacklist, versus paying Twitter for an advertising blitz. -

@bob @celesteh Here's the thing, though, Bob. People on my instances get called Nazis when they're not. Lumped together. If you called me a Nazi to my face, I'd smash your face in with a hammer. Just the same whether a Communist or a Nazi wants to make my instance their home, I allow it, because I'd rather have people open about those stances rather than "closet" Commies or Nazis that come out of nowhere, which you can be guaranteed that Mastodon is now chock-full of people mum about their stances, just waiting in the wings for where they can exploit and takeover.
By that same token, if you can call one of my instances "Nazi" because out of 30,000 accounts 1 person is a "proud" Nazi, can I not call Mastodon.Social a pedophile instance because they have Graham Linehan on board, because I see Graham Linehan as a pedophile?
Why do users of Mastodon hate children, Bob? Why are they so protective of child molesters? -

sealion.club was originally a site documenting GamerGate happenings in early 2015.
When I started seeing Twitter ban groups of people at once, I re-appropriated it into a GNU Social instance sometime in July 2015. It puttered along for about six months on a Digital Ocean droplet until it crashed. So I rebuilt it on a bigger droplet. And Twexit happened. So it crashed. @fl0wn got pulled aboard and did stuff beyond the LAMP stuff I knew to do and got it to where it was functional but I moved it to another VPS provider, but we exceeded their limits, so now we're here.
freezepeach.xyz was spun up shortly after sealion.club in order to document and do screenshots for a tutorial to help people build their own instances. I planned on just letting it go, but a couple of months into it, just letting it sit dormant, people getting kicked off the quitters found it somehow and built their own little community there. So I just let it come along for the ride with sealion.club
As people who whine about the names point out, the names ARE meant to incite. It's not representative of the people on it. But it is a sort of "revenge"; people took normal behavior and desires (asking questions, wanting free expression) and tried to slur them with names. I took these names back from them and wear them as a badge.
or i'm a nazi and i did all this because apparently that's what nazis do; rabidly support free speech and expression for all people, period
