For at least 20 years we have fought a copyright regime which has been used as a tool of oppression: EUCD, "three strikes", ACTA, #Article13, etc. Like a Terminator, it always comes back after we've defeated it, to control the means of distribution of cultural works, serving the interests of the entertainment industry.

Responding To The Surveillance State

If you’re a liberal, and you canvas or campaign or vote or petition or write your representative and it doesn’t get the laws you want passed passed, you’ve failed, and you may as well have not done those things. But if you’re an anarchist and you host a food share or start a coop or go to a book fair with your comrades, and those things don’t singlehandedly topple capitalism and the state - well, you’ve fed people, given workers control over their work, built up relationships with your community, and had a good time

It’s a process, it’s not an all-at-once breaking but a gradual loosening of the chains, your reach widening and your wrists hurting less and less until one day maybe you can slip your hands out. Or maybe you won’t, but you’ve still gotten freer along the way. Those little victories are important and should be celebrated and cherished. That’s how you stay hopeful and happy as a leftist

Really, asking "what should replace Facebook" is putting things the wrong way around.

A more interesting way to ask the question is, "what did Facebook replace."

People used to build their own websites. People used to have blogs. People used USENET which was truly distributed and un-censorable.

Facebook and Google took the open internet and open standards and monetized and made everything crappy. Enough of that. Nothing should replace Facebook, it's done, stick a fork in it.

One word:

G-mail.

E-mail too is federated, decentralized and open-source. Doesn't stop Google from spying on, like, a half of E-mail users. And that's more than enough for most uses. Why is that? That's because a lot of clients made G-mail the default. Even Elementary Mail, which I love, shows this (1) when you start it the first time. And when you want to use some other server, it suddenly blows up to this (2). It becomes a chore to set up, and considering E-mail, being what it is for that long, already has all kinds of autodiscovery tools like MX or SRV records or plain damn Thunderbird ISP Database, and failing all that, just poll the goddamn standard E-mail ports on the domain for auth methods, I'm prepared to wait 500 miliseconds while you do it, it's not hard.

So. Do we really need another Gmail?
