Annah's got the Shotgun (maiyannah@community.highlandarrow.com)'s status on Monday, 13-Feb-2017 17:05:47 UTC Annah's got the Shotgun @takeshitakenji I find it personally kind of amusing, as I cut down more and more on GS' bloat in postActiv as I can, Mastodon is finding more and more ways to add it.
I don't have the notice to hand, but someone said "Its pretty clear there's the well-standardized way to do things, and then there's the Mastodon way to do things" - I find that pretty true in my experience. Basically any time there's problems Gargron finds a way to try to pin it on GNU social when it so often comes down to him not following the standard ways to do it. -

Then again as has already been demonstrated, Mastodon isn't too worried about efficiency. It's needed more hardware thrown at it every time more than two users sign up in a day. -

Annah's got the Shotgun (maiyannah@community.highlandarrow.com)'s status on Wednesday, 08-Feb-2017 04:28:42 UTC Annah's got the Shotgun "Researchers at Stanford and Princeton have succeeded in identifying 70% of web users by comparing their web-browsing history to publicly available information on social networks. The study "De-anonymizing Web Browsing Data with Social Networks" [PDF] found that it was possible to reattach identities to 374 sets of apparently anonymous browsing histories simply by following the connections between links shared on Twitter feeds and the likelihood that a user would favor personal recommendations over abstract web browsing."
What you discuss publicly can and often will be used against you. -

But Google made little effort to publicise another feature that's decidedly less friendly to privacy, because it lets websites ask about users' Bluetooth devices and harvest information from them through the browser."
If you think google gives a shit about privacy or security you are sorely mistaken. -
Annah's got the Shotgun (maiyannah@community.highlandarrow.com)'s status on Friday, 03-Feb-2017 09:41:15 UTC Annah's got the Shotgun @nerthos Oh, I agree. It's a particular trend with the "tumblr" crowd that most transgender people I know actually don't like either. It's one thing to like, intentionally misgender people to piss them off, that's being a bit shit, but it's another to like, make a genuine mistake and not mean something malicious by it, and still ascribe a negative context to it. You have to be understanding of others, if you want them to be understanding of you.
I get a lot of flak myself for not respecting the genderfluid/more than two genders thing, though. I should think, if you're genuinely transitioning, you would desire to be identified as the gender you're transitioning to, not some in-between state. People who insist on some special pronouns tend to out themselves as the ones that are seeking special snowflake status rather than those transitioning because of a genuine medical need. -
Annah's got the Shotgun (maiyannah@community.highlandarrow.com)'s status on Friday, 03-Feb-2017 09:37:13 UTC Annah's got the Shotgun @nerthos Well, when it's the treatment proscribed by a proper physician for a properly-diagnosed Gender Identity Disorder, I have no problems with it.
Where I get a lot dodgier is when people just shop around for a doctor that will give them it anyways, or they just take hormones without supervision.
The term for the latter in the medical community although many consider it a slur is "trans-trenders" They tend to be people that just want the social credit or status afforded to transgender people. You'll notice that almost all of that variety are male-to-female transgenders - it's almost as if we've given women a more privileged place in society and people desire that special treatment.
But where people are getting it as a proper medical treatment I have zero problems with it. I wouldn't have considered it myself if I did. -

Annah's got the Shotgun (maiyannah@community.highlandarrow.com)'s status on Saturday, 28-Jan-2017 19:28:17 UTC Annah's got the Shotgun @bob I think the important thing to realize is that while the social pressure to not have backdoors keeps programmers honest, it doesn't make bad programmers, or even good programmers who get a bit sloppy, more secure. Just less likely to want to be a toadie. IMO. -

Where have we heard it before? Whenever our ethnic or national prejudices are aroused, in times of scarcity, during challenges to national self-esteem or nerve, when we agonize about our diminished cosmic place and purpose, or when fanaticism is bubbling up around us-then, habits of thought familiar from ages past reach for the controls. The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles. Darkness gathers. The demons begin to stir."
