Cybersecurity for the People: How to protect your privacy at a protest

Watch this video for tips on how to prepare your phone before you go to a protest, how to safely communicate with your friends and document the event, and what to do if you get detained or arrested.

(This is the first in a new video series I'm hosting!)

@awilfox well Mastodonia is now a lot larger than it was even a couple of weeks ago. When it was just mastodon.social, before the latest Twitter exodus, there was a lot of criticism of that server as an insular community who blocked or banned people for completely trivial reasons. Even the great @maiyannah was blocked there - I think due to some argument over unwillingness to fix federation bugs.

@lnxw48a1 @csaurus I can't vouch for the accuracy because I'm not a Signal user, but I've read some pretty bad stories about involuntary phone number disclosure via that app.

Added the ability to block particular gnusocial/postActiv nicknames to the !Freedombone control panel under "domain blocking". There are existing block/mute controls via the API, but they're not perfect and so this just ensures that the spooks don't creep back in.

Please note that this does not mean that I have assumed the wooly mantle of a Mastodonian who is fixated upon blocking and banning anyone they happen to politically disagree with. It's more about defending your server from potential legal threats.

@csaurus My main beef with Signal is that by the time you've fixed all of its problems all you've really succeeded in doing is reinventing XMPP with OMEMO.

@csaurus nice. Perhaps there is hope for Signal yet. The main issues are:

    • Stuck to Google push service, which your patch might address
    • Use of telephone numbers should be optional
    • Everyone on Moxie's server is not a good security model. Federate the servers.

!pleroma FE hash routed build has been updated, it contains some fairly cool usability improvements such as:
-Having the side panel scroll independently from the main timeline (allows you to post new statuses and check notifs without being at the top of your timeline)
-Clicking the reply navigation arrows in an expanded conversation does not take you out of your timeline anymore, and they also scroll you to the highlighted post. (You can still click on 'X time ago' to open conversations separately.)
-Attachment previews are shown below the submit button to not scroll it out of view.
-New default pleroma dark/light themes added that are optimized for pleroma use, in order to make it easier to pick a theme that just works.

Another job interview for a C++ job, but I don't expect to get that one. It may sound like sour grapes, but their main customers were in an industry which I don't care about anyway...the dreaded Television. I havn't owned a TV for the longest time.

One thing that's pretty clear is that a lot of users have become very encultured to living within monolithic systems. Anything else is kind of a culture shock to them.

@lambadalambda @yukiame I'm only getting half of the conversation, but this sounds like an education issue. Mastodon is just a particular implementation of OStatus. Pleroma server should be the same once it's feature complete. You could still chat between Twidere using Pleroma server and a Mastodon instance, due to the protocol compatibility.

The mention timeline now works with twidere on pleroma BE. It also doubles as a notification timeline, due to slight difference in semantics. https://social.heldscal.la/attachment/387981

@tobias it is similar to local newspapers, although there may be a lot of nodes with different admins in different jurisdictions and spoof accounts can relocate anywhere or just self-host. So it may be difficult to get the same sort of legal traction which is possible with newspapers.

Apparently there are more than 1000 Mastodon instances now. That's more verifiable than user numbers.

@tobias that's another possibility, although the point which Shatner complains about is that he can't control what happens on other people's nodes. So there can exist "unofficial" ShatnerBots, spoof accounts and so on. Similar happens on Twitter, but because of the centralised design it's possible to globally enforce a single policy.

Reading about what became known as The Shatner Test an observation is that mainstream celebrity status can only exist in a centralised broadcast system. That is, where it's possible to have a rank in the hierarchy and be able to scrupulously enforce the public use of your persona.

In a decentralised system celebrity is more like what it was before radio broadcasting in the era of local music hall stars.

Prediction: if it gets popular enough, very few celebrities of the 20th century mode will endorse or make significant use of federated systems. Instead, what constitutes celebrity itself will change.
