- Rock: corporations aren't our champions
- Hard place: but we don't really have good routes for people to take care of themselves and their communities without draining so much personal energyWe need to make self-hosting easier.

Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Thursday, 20-Apr-2017 16:09:10 UTC Bob Mottram @hypolite Mastodon will stick around for as long as people find it useful. Maybe the Tweetdeck appearance will fall out of fashion eventually. Maybe Pleroma will become more popular once it has a federating backend. It might be more easily themeable. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Thursday, 20-Apr-2017 15:38:16 UTC Bob Mottram @csaurus @lnxw48a1 so this article makes the similar mistakes to others, although the author does understand decentralization. He assumes that internet standards always fail, and yet we have TCP, DNS, HTTP, XML, TLS. The list could go on for a while.
On usernames, that people havn't been making the same complaints about email for the previous N decades is perhaps illustrative of some tech journos fishing for any reason to dislike something not centralized. That the author believes that there is "no adult in the room" presumably means he assumes himself to be incapable of taking adult decisions or of deciding what is legit from what is hype/fakery. -

That will tell you all you need to know about the motivations of the respective players. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Thursday, 20-Apr-2017 14:40:01 UTC Bob Mottram @dbrz I don't think it's so much about stupidity (although sometimes it is) as about affinity. The degree to which you share priors and narratives. In monolithic systems like Twitter users with very little affinity are forced together and then of course clash because their narratives are too divergent. To have a good community the network topology needs to match. One size doesn't fit all. -

Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Thursday, 20-Apr-2017 14:18:38 UTC Bob Mottram @dbrz I expect that this is why when the first generation of Unix hackers were emerging from the primordial slime they decided on "user account" rather than "person account". -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Thursday, 20-Apr-2017 14:16:19 UTC Bob Mottram @dbrz of course it's true that the majority of users are people, but #notallusers -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Thursday, 20-Apr-2017 14:14:38 UTC Bob Mottram @dbrz I'm not sure that calling users people would work, because sometimes they might not be. i.e. users can be other systems, or used purely for isolation of privileges. -

Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Thursday, 20-Apr-2017 14:05:44 UTC Bob Mottram @herrabre quality discourse only seems to happen when the numbers of people involved are small and they share some fraction of priors such that they don't need to read enormous blocks of text to have an intuition for what the conversation is about. -
