@bob To some extent, likely large, we're seeing countries essentially fighting over who gets to control the internet, and corporations trying to leverage "net neutrality" as an activist cause for them to get their own claws into the control aspect. Indeed many of the youtube changes are likely meant to manipulate people into anti-government sentiments in favour of Google's own control aspects. There's quite a game being played there, and the attempts of many to label it in black and white terms is at best niave. -

Every time that you see a complaint about Twitter censorship, just remember most of the same people who complain about it, actively encourage blanket blocklists on Mastodon or the expulsion of the non-people from their respective spaces on Minds or Gabai -

Just to be unequivocal and clear about one thing: 5% is not an industry-standard processing fee amount. The amount I get charged by paypal is approximately (but not always) around 1.9%. The amount I got charged by Stripe when I used it briefly was 2.1% Patreon IS taking at least a chunk of that 5% for themselves, whatever they keep telling people -

It kind of amuses me that people will ardently refuse Bitcoin wasn't intended to be a kind of pyramid scheme. Because it very clearly greatly advantaged early adopters and yet relied upon bringing in more people to actually give it value. -

I like that its lampshaded that there's propoganda about how the Jedi were kind of tyrants in their own right ... because they were. In the prequels they legitimately try to overthrow a corrupt government because they dislike it, and that's basically what leads to the infamous order to have them exterminated - by doing so they played right into the despots hands.
Wow, even DICE have more nuance than Disney writers. Christ. -

@gameragodzilla Disney is literally the poster child of ripping off children's fairytales poorly and then gussying them up in singalong songs and high production values to make them sell.
In other words, they're EA of the film industry.
An EA of the film industry that has so much regulatory capture its kind of scary, and can basically do whatever it wants. Say what you like about EA, it doesn't have that power over the government Disney has accumulated over the years and has to at least pretend to play nice. -

A friend of mine who works in film has been saying to me that this is essentially a semi-violent culture change for Hollywood. A lot of very skeevy behaviour has been normalized in film production culture, in particular Hollywood's, that is facing a severe backlash. I tend to trust her judgement on that kind of thing for a variety of reasons: she's well-connected in that industry, she's dealt with some of it herself (without going into details that aren't mine to share), and we see that very publicly with stuff like Polanski. -

How hostile Mastodon's userbase acts towards any new instance that even steps a bit out of lockstep underlines how little they actually believe in the principles of decentralized federated networks and how much it was actually about them having their own sandbox where they had power. -

Mastodon has always treated federation not as an integral part of the design but rather as a marketing pull and little more. Its been clear for a long time they don't care about comparability with other software, they want everyone using theirs . People going from Twitter to Mastodon are just trading one jail for another. -

Anyone, no matter how marginalized, can create their own instance and connect with the network, and say whatever they wish, and the other sites on the Fediverse can react as they wish. The freedom of association always goes hand-in-hand with the freedom of speech. If you are not free to associate how you wish, then you are not free to speak how you wish. You cannot have one without the other. -

Ahh I wonder what major backdoor or exploit they're trying to draw attention away from with this latest net neutrality push. Call me a cynic but every one of the last handful of times that net neutrality has come up have also come around the time of big goverment exploits being discovered. They're trying to distract you. -

@bob Basically what appears to have changed from what I read into the story is now they are not just looking for criminal activity in documents, but also political activism. They appear to be targetting activists that go against the establishment in the same way we recently saw this happen to many activist youtubers as well. This seems entirely intentional and something they planned to do. -

@bob Story going around that a lot of activist/journalists Google Docs documents got removed for Terms of Service violations. I mean, I would tell anyone doing anything vaguely controversial to stay away from cloud services anyways, but this highlights just why I make that recommendation I suppose. -
